ST+Ms- Potty training? (XP: Nov '12)

DD is just about 16 months old, and the thought really never occurred to me as to when to potty train- I just always thought I'd 'know' because she would start showing interest in it, I thought maybe around 2(ish). But lately she will stop what she's doing, come stand in front of me and pat her diaper with a concerned look on her face. I always ask if she is going pee-pee and sure enough- she seems to have a wet diaper. (If not at that exact moment, i'll check again in a few minutes and its wet) Today she came up to me with a wipe (she LOVES getting a wipe out for me when we do diaper changes) just a few moments after a diaper change with that concerned look on her face- what do you know, she had a dirty diaper. I was kind of stunned when she did that and it got me thinking- could she be ready? Isn't 16mo a little young to be showing interest in that?

She doesn't really talk yet, and I just kind of expected that to come first. What did your kiddo do that were signs that s/he was ready to be potty trained?

  • We've been doing a very low key version of elimination communication with DS since he was 7 months old. From about 8-10 months (at 10 months we went on a month long trip) he was pooping on the potty almost 100% of the time and peeing maybe 25%. We lost the EC rhythm while we were traveling, but are getting back into it and "catch" a lot of poops and an occasional pee.

If she's showing that much interest and self-understanding of needing to go, I would definitely put her on the potty when she signals she needs to pee (and poop if she starts signaling that too). I'm not sure what I'd do regarding true "potty training" right now, where you'd have her out of diapers...especially with a new baby coming soon. But it's certainly not out of the realm of possibilities. I have a friend who potty trained her DD at 1 year. Her son took longer, though, so it just depends on the kiddo (and gender, from what I've heard).

Oh by no means to I plan to have her out of diapers soon! I just wasn't planning on even attempting training until 2(ish), but her behavior has really caught my attention. I just don't want to ignore it simply because I'm not ready, ya know?

Im glad she's telling me she has a dirty diaper... now I just need to figure out how to get her to tell me before. I like how you wrote it, a low key version of EC- not potty training... Thats exactly what i'd like to start, Thanks!

  • I'm starting to feel like an underachiever in my family since apparently everyone had their children potty trained at one.

  • I would do it now. She's telling you she's ready. If you wait it's gonna be harder
  • Thanks ladies... I think Ill get a little toilet and let her check it out, see where it goes from there. (FX!!)
