Begging for some common sense

Well, DS is sick.  Again.  And we'll all get it.  Again.  He had the flu two weeks ago and this time we had to go pick him up from school yesterday because, in the words of the school nurse, his whole kindergarten class was "dropping like flies."  It's a stomach virus.  Great.

Please, I'm begging here, if you have school aged children now or just in the future, if your kid is sick...Keep Them At Home!  We have a joke in our small town, "Attendance policies seem to bring plague." and it's so true!!!  I was at our award assembly back in May and we had two students receive 13 year perfect attendance awards and all I could think was, "I wonder how many kids they got sick because their parents never kept them at home."  Because, unless they were freak children, they got sick on occasion.  13 years of perfect attendance just isn't normal!!

Just common sense people.  I'm sorry if your own kid being sick is inconveniencing you, but if you send your sick child to school you are 1. not being fair to your child who needs care to get better and 2. spreading it around so that every other parent and child has to suffer for it!

Vent over.  Thank you.

  • I teach first grade, and you have no idea how many times kids would come in sick and say, "my mom gave me tylenol this morning." And bam, they'd have a fever within a few hourrs. Way to give your kid a fever reducer so it won't register for a few hours.

  • Seriously.  I would get SO mad last year when my students showed up sick as dogs, their parents knowing full well 1-I was pregnant and 2- duh, you're gonna get the rest of the kids sick. ughh.

  • When I worked at the preschool parents used to lie to us all the time, "oh he's not sick", "he didn't run a fever at home", and my favorite "he hasn't had a diarrehea diaper at all for us". They would get all pissy when we have to call them from work to pick up their children. You knew your child was sick, dang`it!

They would dose them with tylenol or motrin so the kid was fever free until about 1 oclock, then sware up and down that they aren't sick for them. Like daycare majically makes them ill and it all disappears as soon as they get to their house.

  • Last year was ridiculous bring pregnant. I teach kinder too and in a low income area. They would come with pink eye, high fevers, etc. If I asked if they told mommy they would say "she said I am not allowed to tell you". Head lice was a fave too or the pukers first thing in the morning...uuugggh I don't want to go back yet.
Yes please keep your kids home if they are sick. They're getting sent home anyway.

  • If only everyone had healthcare and paid sick days.....this is bigger than individuals, this is a political problem!

  • Just another reason why I'm considering homeschooling dd
  • My mom NEVER took me to the doctor. I had nasal polyps that were discovered until they almost occluded my airway, numerous untreated strep throat episodes, sinus infections, etc.

Now, my tricuspid valve in my heart is bad and the doctor thinks it is because of all the untreated strep. In a mixed blessing, my heart problem was discovered during my pregnancy.

My kids don't and won't go to school sick. I will also take them to the doctor because untreated and unrecognized illness can have a long lasting effect.

I do agree w PP about needing sick time and health benefits for all so parents can get their kids treatment and TLC when they are sick
