Natural Birth

Done with OB!

I currently live in a state where it is illegal for midwives to deliver babies without an attending physician, but will be moving in a few weeks.  I am SO glad to be done with this psycho.

I have a history of weird reactions to vaccines and medications.  Like seizure disorder, memory loss, paranoid episodes, cluster headaches, med-induced hepatitis (and the nurses kept giving me contraindicated meds that my charts specifically said to avoid while I was delirious), toxic epidermal necrolysis weird (and life threatening.)  It's been a long hard road to recovery, and I'm mostly back to normal, aside from my weight and lingering mental blocks.  I'm one of several in my family to have similarly weird reactions to stuff.  Trying a new medication while my child is dependent on my body is NOT an option.  Injecting my son with unnecessary vaccines is NOT an option (how do they expect my baby to get Hep B, exactly?  I've been tested for it, and I'm clear.)

So I run through that with my OB at about 4 months along.  I ask if there's any way she would be OK with me avoiding medications during labor and delivery.  She looks at me like I've grown a second head.  "EVERYONE gets medicated."  Not even willing to consider TRYING a natural birth.  What ran through my head: "Well, I'm not coming anywhere near you while I'm in labor, then."

Unsurprisingly, my blood pressure yesterday was a full 10 points lower than other prenatal visits, just because I KNEW it was the last time I had to deal with this psycho.  She asked who I was transferring my care to, and I said a birth center (my prenatal visits WILL be at the birth center).  She started to go on about how she would NEVER tell anyone it was OK to have anything other than a hospital birth... And I finally cut her off with "I chose this because I don't want to HAVE to argue with doctors or nurses while I'm incapacitated to stop them from doing something that will make me disabled AGAIN or put my son through what I've been through."

I only hope she got my point.

Now that we're moving, and that DH has read up on it more, we're doing a homebirth.  And our hospital back-up has more midwives than OBs.  I called that hospital to check on their opinion of un-medicated birth, and I got a similar "do you really have to ask?" attitude - only this time, their response was "If the mom wants a natural birth, we do our utmost to ensure that.  If the mom wants drugs, we can do that too.  It's up to the mom what medications she gets."  It was like finding a unicorn in the backyard.

  • Congratulations!

You deserve to have the birth you want and the proper professionals to help facilitate that to the best f their medical oath. I'm glad you found those circumstances and got out of the unfortunate circumstance of an ill-informed medical "professional".

    Good for you!

  • Awesome!  Good for you :)  The only thing here I can't get behind--women should *never* feel like getting the care they ask for and deserve is like finding a unicorn in the backyard (great analogy, though!).  So glad you've found the unicorn and I can only hope fewer and fewer women find patient-centered care elusive!
