IEP for kid with Physical Disability

Hi. I have a 4 year old who will start Kindergarten next year. She has un-named connective tissue disorder. She has physical issues. Her knees sublex  She currently has an IEP bc of her fine motor issues. But, they are almost resolved.

Kindergarten is next year. Academically she is fine. I am just worried about her physically. Bc of her knees sublexing, I am worried about her getting hurt at school next year. Her current preschool is very good at keep her accident free.

So, ideally I would like her to go to the public schools next year. It is half a day preschool. Can she have an IEP next yr if she only has physical problems? Like she can not do the trampoline and jump from high surfaces etc. I need to protect her knees. She wears a knee brace too.

Questions are...

Can she have an IEP next yr if she only has physical problems?

How do I make sure she is safe when she goes to 1st grade and they have recess?

Thanks.

Ali

Re: IEP for kid with Physical Disability

  • I am not well versed in IEPs (our first is next week). Does she require an aid or adaptive PE? What will she require from the school?

  • Yes, there is eligibility for physical impairments. Her eligibility may be Orthopedic Impairment or Other Health Impairment.

There are also accomodations through a 504 plan if she does not need specialized instruction.

  • If she needs and qualifies for services (PT), than an IEP is what you'll discuss.  If you just want/need accommodations, then a 504 plan is what is appropriate.

  • My kindergartener has an IEP for physical issues.  She gets PT and OT for what manifests as primarily insecurity on the playground, gross motor delays, and balance issues.  None of her IEP goals are academic or social in nature, all physical.
