Baby wearing while pregnant?

Moms who already have two or more kids...

I still wear my 9 month old when we're out and about, I use a Maya Wrap and usually hip carry him.  But now that I'm pregnant again and have that early baby bloat I'm finding his legs, feet and the lower ledge uncomfortable on my mid section, not to mention a tender chest.

Were you able to continue baby wearing?  What did you do when your belly started to expand?

Re: Baby wearing while pregnant?

  • I'm 20w pregnant with number 2 and I'm still wearing on a daily basis. I use a SSC for long outings the belt sits under my bump, I think I'm carrying rather high as I'm still in normal jeans buttoned up. I use a RS for quick ups and downs but carry her high so she's still mostly over my bump and I'm planning to use my woven or MT when and if I need something that ties over my bump. I already own all there carriers so I have this freedom. I plan to carry DD as long as possible.

  • I wore up to the end but only in a back carry - even a hip carry got pretty awkward for me when my belly was bigger (although I know hip carries still work for some).  I used either a mei tai or a woven wrap and tied above my belly (although some women find it more comfortable to tie off below the belly).
  • I did back carries in a woven wrap until a few days before DS2 was born. I've never cared for hip carries, but I did do some front carries into the second trimester, namely for nursing. I recently did a blog post on wearing while PG for my babywearing group that you may find helpful. I'll link you: here (parts 1 and 2 are right below the wearing a newborn post).

  • So funny you posted that link, because I read it last night after posting here!  Thanks for sharing!
  • I had to stop at 10w bc of severe SPD but I am also predominantly a RSlinger so it's not really conducive to BWing while PG. You could try a back carry with a woven and a tibetan tie. Or perhaps an onbu tied tibetan as well.
  • I just ordered a Beco Butterfly 2 to wear DS in while pregnant with 2. I'm only 12 weeks and can still use our Moby, but wanted something I could do back carries unassisted as I get further along. My DH isn't around much and I'm hoping the Butterfly will help me get out and about more.
  • The most recent time I wore DS who is 3.5 yrs old, I was 38 w 4 d pregnant! : I was rather proud of myself and took pics to commemorate the occasion. LOL

I think high back carries are best during pregnancy. I just tied my wrap ir MT above my bump, and it worked great.
