self weaning? Anyone and when

Just curious if anyone on this board let (is letting) LO self wean and at what age did you start to see it really slow down?  DD nurses 4x a day and I'd love to wean the two midday feeds but they are nap feeds so she is more attached that if just a regular one.  I'd like to let her lead but fear that may be longer than I want to wait so hoping for a happy medium between now and 16 months.

Re: self weaning? Anyone and when

  • I let DS self-wean and he finished nursing at 19 months.  I would say around 17-18 months was when I noticed him slowing down to the degree that I thought he was moving toward weaning.  I was also 19 weeks pregnant and I think my milk supply had diminished, so that may have contributed to the timing of it, but I can't be completely sure.

  • I let my little guy SW and he is pretty much done now.  He will occasionally nurse once a day in the morning, but other than that he's weaned.  It made it such a better transition for both of us that he did it on his own terms :)

    Me: 30   DH: 32
    TFAS since May 2013
8/14 - Bloodwork showed heterozygous MTHFR gene mutation and elevated AMH (but no cysts)
9/14 - HSG, Hysteroscopy and laparoscopy showed tubes clear, but found and removed Endometriosis, scar tissue and 2 small benign masses on my tubes.
11/14 - Daily ultrasounds confirmed that my follicles are not releasing the egg and every other day blood draws showed very low progesterone... DH's SA was near perfect
12/14 - moving onto meds!!! Hold up!!!  Surprise BFP after only taking the progesterone!  Now what do I do with all of the other meds we already paid for?!  Due at the end of August 2015 Beta#1- 4434 @ 22DPO  Beta#2 - 7335 @ 25DPO Beta #3 - 14429  @ 28DPO
  • DS nursed constantly until about 17 months and then just started dropping sessions. When we were down to just mornings, about 18 months, I got pregnant and at 19 months (pretty much 19 months to the day!) he weaned completely. It was on his terms and he only asked once after that and thought it was funny to try. Then I never heard about it again. I don't know if it was because I was pregnant and my supply might have crashed or if he was just ready to wean. Since he had dropped the other sessions, I think he was really ready though.

  • My LO has recently cut back to about 3 sessions per day.  She's not getting as much milk and I think she' on her way.  At this point, I'm in no hurry. . . I don't really have a plan.
  • The average age for a child to self-wean, globally, is between 2 and 4.  It seems, anecdotally, that it's more like between 2 and 3 in the US.

At 2yr 4mo, DD is still going strong nursing 4-6 times per day.

  • I intended to self wean but my DD is going to be 2 next week and she had shown no interest in weaning.  When I got pregnant with #2 and she wasn't slowing down at all, I decided to actively wean (albeit slowly) because I don't want to tandem nurse.  Last month we cut out "bored" nursing so we were only nursing 4x a day (AM, down for nap, up from nap, PM).  At the beginning of this month, we cut out the midday nap sessions so we are just doing going to bed and waking up.

So to answer your question, my DD was still not slowing down on her own by 22 months (when I decided to actively wean).

That's pretty much us to a tee....

  • DD slowly started weaning herself before 9m.  She hardly wanted to do it ever.  I went down to 4x/day at that point and the 2 feedings during the day were still a struggle.  At 11m I went down to 2x/day and that was much better.  Right around 12m, she would refuse just those 2x as well most of the time.  She'd bite me, and try to get up to play or talk.  So I have stopped BFing for about a week now :(  She doesn't seem to miss it at all.
