walk me through TTC

DH and I talked it through....we're going to start TTC in January!! (AHHH!) We were planning on starting late next summer, but he'll be gone possibly into the winter, and we'd like our kids to be closer together.

However, this really only gives us a 3ish month window. I know the odds of getting KU in that time period are pretty slim, so I desperately need help. I honestly know very little about this....A was a whoops baby.

Any suggestions on where to look? The sheer amount of info out there is overwhelming. What's temping? How do the OPKs work? I'm on the minipill right now, will that affect things? Any good books to read?

Wow, I'm excited.

  • Pretty much the holy grail of TTC and knowing your body is Taking Charge of your Fertility by Toni Weschler.  It's an easy read, easy to reference, and if nothing else, like I said, really teaches you how to watch for your body's clues.

    Good luck!

  • I just wanted to comment to say Yay! I really am of no help otherwise, because M and this current pregnancy were oopsies. I know nothing about that other stuff!

However, let one of us know... Me, moosey, panda, tori, stacie...when you're ready and we can send you some of the water!

  • I second reading TCOYF like Tori mentioned.  I did not read it - but I was on the TTTC board through both miscarraiges and IF treatments and everyone raved about it.

This is such a BS statement - but since I've been through it and I heard it all - you HAVE TO relax.  I would recommend having a glass (or two) of wine at night the week youre O'ing and getting busy with DH because the more you stress ("I have to get PG in three months or else..."), the tougher it will be to get PG.

I'm not TTC but man, I'm super excited for you!!!  Congrats!

  • How exciting! Definitely read TCOYF. That will tell you all you need to know about temping, charting, and all of that. Plus, it's just a really interesting read.

I'm not totally sure how a minipill will affect ttc but for some people it takes a few cycles off of hormonal birth control for their cycles to regulate. You might want to take that into consideration.

  • I'm a fan of fertilityfriend.com. I never had great luck with OPK's, but tempting worked to show when I O'd.

Why January? You could start a little early to give yourself better odds, even though if it works right away that would mean your H would miss more of the new baby.

    Good luck!

  • congrats!! Maybe get off the mini-pill soon? Honestly O was conceived our first try. My friend who read everything and all that jazz told to me to look for my cervical mucus about mid-cycle (I had regular 28 day cycles, so 14 days after my period started that month) and have sex. So I saw it one day at work when I went to the bathroom, thought "well let's see if I get pregnant tonight if we have sex" and 2 weeks later a BFP! So that is all I know about TTC. Best of luck when you start!

I really, desperately want him here for the first few newborn months. I was by myself for A, and it was horrible, and I never ever ever want to go through that again. I'd rather have kids further apart than be alone with a newborn and toddler, with zero friends or family in the area.

  • These girls have you totally in the right direction. I just wanted to personally recommend the 20- day OPK. I've only bought two of those kits ever and both produced pregnancies. haha. And we averaged 4-5 months trying before I figured it out. Now I tell everyone :)

Definitely this!! I only read bits and pieces of the book, but it is a wealth of information whether you are TTC or not. It teaches a heck of a lot more than general sex ed ever did!

We didn't temp/chart/OPK/etc., when we were TTC, but just having a basic idea of how my cycle worked and my average cycle length (long!) really helped. We conceived on cycle 4 with DD1 and cycle 3 with DD2 just by watching basic body clues.

    Good luck!!

I would suggest getting off the pill soon and using back up so your body can regulate before January.

    ITA!

    Good luck!!
