Of course it would happen on a Friday. Question?

So I was running some errands in town today and I noticed that my stomach kept tightening up, like I was having a contraction. Now, I normally get BH when I'm at work and they're uncomfortable, but not painful and I can feel them at the bottom of my uterus.

These weren't uncomfortable, and I probably would have missed them altogether if I hadn't been poking at my stomach and could feel it hardening.

The contractions would happen about every 5-10 minutes and last about 30 seconds for maybe an hour and it's pretty much my entire stomach that's contracting. This can't be good! I have a call in to the on call OB, but haven't heard anything back yet. Now I'm sitting here at home and they're starting up again. But now I'm wondering if it might be the baby stretching out? The last "contraction" I had formed a noticeable lump on the right side of my bellybutton, but I don't know! Any STM's remember this happening? What ended up happening?

  • I've been having a crazy amount of BH and some are definitely uncomfortable. My OB said as long as they aren't "labor like" (spotting, taking your breath away, and no fluid leaking) it's okay. Just eat something with protein, lay on your left side, and chug some water.

& yes, sometimes baby stretching out and changing positions can and will cause BH. Try to relax and not think about them.

  • I wish I could help you more! I would be calling my OB too especially since they have been lasting for over an hour. I would ask to come in and be monitored even if they say no. Have you been drinking enough water today?

  • How far above your belly button did you notice the tightening? That sounds like normal BH contractions to me. I never got them this early, but they were always accompanied by a rock hard stomach.

Thanks! I haven't had anything "labor like" so that makes me feel a lot better.

I'm chugging water as we speak, but I did have a few extra cups of decaf coffee this morning, so I'm sure that didn't help anything.

It was about level to my bellybutton where the uterus stops. I always noticed them way down in the pelvic area, but now my entire stomach is rock hard. This is normal for you?

Thanks for your guys' input. It's definitely a peace of mind. Everything has gone so smoothly so far that the first thing that's slightly out of whack almost sent me straight to the ER.

  • I had pretty intense braxton hicks with DS - yes, your entire stomach cramps up rock hard.  I have noticed them much, much earlier this time around and am not thrilled by this. :)  I'm glad you called your OB though.  If you don't hear back soon, call again.  If you get really worried, don't hesitate to go to the ER, even if everthing turns out fine you can't be too safe.  I agree that I would take it easy and drink a ton of water though.  It's probably just BH.

  • I had them consistently with DS from 26 weeks up until delivery day. My doc always said if they were not too painful to drink a lot more water than you typically do and then lay down on your left side and rest. If they go away from the resting and water that is good. But if they are consistent between contractions and they get closer, last longer, they hurt, or if you notice bleeding or abnormal discharge to always call right away. For now I would suggest talking with your OB, and drinking lots of water and resting for the night.
