Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Bad parent of the day award...

goes to me! LO is 6 months.  We are doing BLW.  I offered him spaghetti for dinner and he choked.  I am talking really choking... mouth wide open and not getting air.  He is okay now but it was scary.  I think I may be moving to purees!  I even read the BLW book.

Re: Bad parent of the day award...

  • Well, that sounds terrifying and I'm glad he's alright. Don't beat yourself up, but this is one reason I don't embrace the whole BLW idea. Purees are perfectly fine and for the most part, perfectly safe:)

Uh...what is BLW? Can a 6 month old have spaghetti???

I was thinking this same thing...  As for giving a 6mo spaghetti instead of a puree, yea, just a bad idea!!  Purees are perfectly fine - put the spaghetti in a blender, but even at 9mo I wouldn't consider DS ready for actual spaghetti yet...

BLW is short for Baby Led Weaning. I have heard of giving them large pieces of food when working with BLW but not spaghetti. It could be part of the practice...I'm not sure.

OP I'm glad your LO is okay.

  • Prob because the noodles are long.. I would stick with more solid pieces he can grab onto and easier to "chew". Noodles/pasta like egg noodles are shorter and if you boil soft they might go down easier and if swallowed would prob not cause gagging. Just see it as a learning process! Don't let it discourage you if you still choose to do BLW. I know it works great for a lot of kids!

  • macaroni noodles are also good bc air can still pass thru them.

My daughter had spaghetti when she was 6 months. She's also had scrambled eggs, toast, pancakes, steamed carrot sticks, shredded chicken, and all sorts of other fun stuff (like babagnoush, yum). Tonight she had corn bread, BBQ pulled pork, and carrots just like everyone else. I do feed her purees, too, so I can't say I BLW. I think people should just feed their babies however they feel comfortable. And OP, you are not a bad parent! These things happen. Just expressing your concern over the situation leds me to believe you are a good mom!

  • I tried BLW once and DD choked also.. I don't know if it was something I did wrong or what but it scared the crap out of me.. We decided to just stick with purees

  • Rotini works really well as a pasta for BLW.  We've been doing BLW since DD was 5mo.  She's 7mo now and just starting to get the hang of it.  She chocked a lot in the beginning but her reflexes were good and she spit everything up.  She then went right back to eating so it bothered DH and I more than her.  After doing this a few times we became more comfortable with her reflexes.  I sit right by her when she's eating and I'm constantly paying attention to how she's doing.  For us BLW has been great.  DD did NOT like us feeding her purees... she wanted to do it herself.  I did find that in the beginning she wasn't getting as much in as I would like so I will let her feed herself for a bit and then I will use my fingers as a spoon and let her bring the food in my hands into her mouth.

If BLW is making you more stressed then it really isn't worth it.  Every baby is different and what works for some doesn't work for others.

  • Thank you ALL for the suggestions.  I completely understand how to feed your LO is based on what you are comfortable with and mommy instinct.
  • I agree that BLW is definitely an individual thing that you'll have to use your own judgement on what you feel is best for your baby. We don't do it exclusively because dd gets purees sometimes, but every time we eat she's at the table & gets everything we eat. We haven't had her seriously choke on anything, but we're probably just lucky or have a baby that doesn't easily choke (for example my nephew around the same age can't eat some of the larger foods dd chomps on, so obviously every child is different). Don't be afraid to keep trying new things, just cut them up a little more and keep trying to figure out what works for you and your baby!
