January 2013 Moms

fall/winter coat recommendations??

I'm assuming many of you will also be needing a maternity fall/winter coat this year! I need to get one or order one asap since it'll be getting colder where i live very soon and none of my current coats can zip!

I don't want to spend a ton, but do want something that will hold up through the entire fall and winter, and of course, something cute and versatile! I am a teacher, so i dress up everyday. Some sort of a pea coat or trench coat look would be ideal, but not necessary. Also, a hood would be nice :)

Anyone get one yet? Where?

Re: fall/winter coat recommendations??

  • I'm going to try and make it without a jacket! I'm new to Northern Virginia and I'm hoping I can get away with an open peacoat because I don't want to buy a new one!

GL finding a coat! I'd probably invest in one if it got colder earlier here.

  • Loading the player...
  • I've been told by several people who had early winter babies to just skip the coat and plan on wearing layers... So far I can still zip/button all my jackets with room to spare. As DD gets closer it may be an issue, but I figure by then I'll have the extra heat from LO and won't notice the cold as much anyway!

ETA: I live in Michigan so we have our share of cold weather! Today's high is in the 50s!

  • I hadn't even thought of that.  I live in So Cal, though, so I'm assuming the open pea coat will be fine for this year.  I'll just layer a sweater underneath if need be.

Target usually has really cute coats, but again, as a so cal girl, they're plenty warm for me, but may not cut it in actual winter climates.  I've always found cute and reasonable priced stuff at Burlington, too.

  • January is usually the coldest month here and since Im due at the end of it... yeah... lol. Oh and they are calling for a doozy of a winter.

I have a coat from last time I will reuse.  I got it at Old Navy - and usually I hate ON for fit and quality but this coat was awesome. They have a similar one now - down maternity coat. They should have some big winter outerwear sale soonish! So it was super cheap too.

Also you will probably need a maternity coat post partum too. Things dont go back that quick for most women ;)

Yeah I live in western NY so we definitely get cold, snowy and stormy here!  It would be impossible to go an entire season without a coat here (we live on lake ontario so we get all sorts of lovely lake effect weather).  I'm due Feb 1st, and usually I pull out a winter coat sometime in October and wear one through March...

Unfortunately my current winter coats would only work if i left them open, and I shiver at the thought if I had to be outside for any reason when it was snowing with an open coat :)

  • I'm in Colorado and I just plan on wearing layers as well. My winter jacket is still kind of big on me anyways so I think I'll be able to manage Wink at least I'm hoping!

  • I'm in GA but I plan on layering and then if I get really cold, I'll wear DH's puffy north face. (That's what i did last time).

I almost never buttoned my peacoat when I was living in Denver. I can't imagine Virginia will be much colder than Denver but I know the mountains would've been worse. My peacoat was from Forever 21 so I got a really cheap one anyways!

  • Old Navy has a down one and a pea coat that I've been eying online. It's hard to tell what the pea coat looks like in person though - it could be cute or it could be shaped like a paper bag. Any own either of these?

This is my plan. It seems like around here most pregnant women will buy a larger sized light zip up coat and then layer over it with their normal winter coat, gloves, hat, etc.

  • I got a great longer (kind of a mid-length), pea-coat style coat from Target when I was pregnant last time.  I *think* it was like $40, if I'm remembering correctly and I was really happy with it!

  • My sister and BFF both had maternity pea coats from ON that looked pretty nice.  I will either see if I can borrow my sister's or wear my own coat unbuttoned (it was sort of a trench pea coat, so I am hoping I can just tie it shut above my stomach).

OP, have you considered looking on craigslist or eBay for coats if you don't want to spend a lot of money?  Or, depending on the size difference between you and your husband, does he have a nice winter jacket that you could borrow?

I have an older version of the down one (2 years ago) and was really really happy with it. It was nice and warm (it was a bad winter)!

  • I scored a CRAZY deal at a Motherhood outlet store...  A $90 wool pea coat was marked down to like $52 (or something) and was then 75% off, so I got it for $13 and change.  I figured that for that price, I better get it. ;)

  • I'm definitely getting some sort of a coat, but havent bought one yet. FYI... I was due in early June with DD and didn't get a coat. It was challenging for a few weeks in March to stay warm  and I was only 20 some weeks at that point.

  • I've been looking everywhere and people either don't have them out yet, or they are super expensive. I've been keeping my eye on Craigslist as well. There's no way I could get by without a coat. I'm in WI, and it gets down below zero around here in winter. Usually a peacoat isn't even warm enough for me!

I hear ya!  I'm on the other side of the lake in Kingston, ON. I lived here my whole life till the age of 17, moved to Niagara Falls for 10 years, and now have been back through one winter already.  NFLS gets way more snow, but Kingston is absolutely frigid in the winter.  Layers absolutely won't work for me.. not even a pea coat over a sweater.  I'm going to check out a local maternity store and see what they have.  I'm hoping I can find a nice down jacket somewhere for not too much.  Already in the evenings here a sweater isn't quite enough, but days are still so/so.

  • I just received a pea coat from a friend and its Liz Lange Maternity for Target. I did look at the Target website and I was in the store there last week but they didnt have any coats out yet. I am in Western New York and also dress up for work. My friend was in CT when she wore it, so I am hoping that itll be warm enough. So keep an eye out on the Target website.

I wish I could borrow his!  Great idea...But his are XXL mens... even at 9 months i'm sure they'll be way to big :)  I'm jealous of everyone that says they can just "go to their husbands closet" to find stuff that fits... i can only borrow his teeshirts for bed!

I'd rather have everything be too big than too small- I went to grab a pair of DH's boxers to sleep in, and I couldn't get them over my ass. I felt so huge!

Where are you in Northern VA? I'm in DC and I wasn't planning on getting a maternity coat since it doesn't usually get really cold here until Jan/Feb anyway. I was just planning on wearing all my winter coats open if I need to go outside before LO is born, and I have a peacoat that is a size too big (it was like $10 on clearance at Wet Seal last spring) that I was thinking would work fine for after she's born.

I used to live very close to there. Prescott ON. Now I live closer to Niagara Falls. My sister still lives that direction so I drive past Kingston all the time.

As for coat for me. I plan to either see if a friend can lend me a coat, since a few are larger than me. Or I am going to just wear one of DHs really heavy zip up sweatshirts or his ski jacket. Not the best look at there, but I refuse to spend money on a cot I will wear for one winter only.
