am I the only one who hates Isla?

If you love it, I'm not judging you. I just DON'T GET IT. SO not my style I am consistently confused as to why everyone loves it.

Now Elsa, reminds me of Casablanca and is beautiful. *shrug*

Actually, I believe Ingrid Bergman's character was named Ilsa (slightly different pronounciation), but you're right it's a beautiful name.  For Isla, I can take it or leave it. I don't feel strongly about it either way.  I also don't know any actual little girls named Isla so it's more of an idea to me that a name I've seen in reality.

  • It's an old lady name around here.  There are lot's of old women named Isla where I live.  I don't see it as a young person's name!

  • I wouldn't say I hate it, but I would never pick it. I love Elsa too, even like Ayla and Aliyah...but never cared for Isla much.

This.  I have also never seen in IRL.  I have never heard of Isla Fisher, despite being a People magazine subscriber, so I feel like it would be consistently butchered in my area of the country (Midwest).

  • Funny its just  a total matter of opinion-  I happen to think Isla is lovely but think Elsa is dusty and old not in a refreshing way like I like some of the older lady names
  • Seeing it took me forever to figure out how to pronouce it, I'm not a huge fan.  I think it's a pretty name just not my taste.

Everything you said. I love Isla, but think Elsa sounds old and ugly.

  • DH really likes it and it was one of two names he suggested that I vetoed because I just couldn't get on board. [Isla & Penelope]
  • Well, we have an Isla so I do love it, but I can see how it is a fairly polarizing name.  It is not classic in the sense that everyone has heard it before, but it has been around for a long time and is very common in Europe and Australia.  I *get* that it has trended very quickly and that was my biggest hesitation with the name.  I do worry that it will be time stamped and hope that it doesn't climb the charts too quickly.  I was happy that it *only* jumped 30 spots last year compared to other names that jumped 100 places.  Most people have never heard it before when I tell them her her name and I always think that is interesting since it is far more common (statistically speaking based on the SSA list) than my boys' names.

FWIW- I really don't like the name Elsa.  It reminds me of a pet name for a farm animal (sort of like a Bessy the cow association).  You would think I would like it since it sounds so similar to Isla, but I just don't.

I totally agree with this!  I have never met or heard of an Isla IRL, but I think it is really pretty.  My niece is Ayah (Eye-uh) so maybe that is why I think it sounds pretty...close name.

  • I don't hate it but I don't get the obsession. I tend to read things in my head as the way they look (like Wednesday) even though I pronounce them correctly but with this name I always have to correct myself from saying Is-la. Good thing I don't know anyone with this name IRL or I would butcher it.

  • No, I'd rate it as one of the worst names personally. But I also wouldn't say Elsa was much better.

Don't like it, too easy to mispronounce. I would definitely say 'iz-luh' over "eye-luh"

That's how it's pronounced?!?  yup, I've been mispronouncing it in my head....how is "Is" pronounced "eye?"??? I change my vote....I do hate it :-)

  • I don't hate it but I'm tired of seeing it on here. I don't know one IRL but I feel like out of 5-6 girl name posts on here at least one of them will have Isla on the list. It doesn't mean everyone is picking it but I liked it better when it was less well known. I actually liked Ayla before I ever heard of Isla but now I think the latter spelling is clearer.

  • The only Isla I knew IRL pronounced it Iz-luh (she's my age).  Nice enough girl, but I'm not a fan.  The Eye-la pronunciation is even more annoying to me.

  • I am not a fan.  Also, it's Is-La is island and Spanish and that's the only pronunciation I think of when I see it.  Not Eye-La.

On another note, I despise the name Declan and everyone seems to love it.  I just can't wrap my head around it either.

Hmmmm the "s" is silent. You know like the word island and isle... Or do you say island?
  • Dear Haters,

Go ahead and name your daughters Brielle and Eliana.  I'd be thrilled if Isla didn't get more popular ...

    Sincerely,

    Isla's Mommy.
