Trick or Treat

Every year hubby and I search around and find different haunted houses to go to.  The other day he says to me, are you going to be able to do the haunted houses this year?  Will it be ok since your pregnant.  LMFAO Hubby is way to cute.

Unless I'm actually being chased by a serial killer I don't think there's enough chance that I'll be scared enough to go into 2mnths early.

  • That is sweet of him, and just so you are aware that you may want to ask your doctor about going to a haunted house.  They are not always recommended because of the lights (can cause seizures when pregnant even if you aren't typically susceptible to them)  and the fact that you would unnecessarily be elevating your heart rate.  It may be totally fine, but I would just double check if I were you.

this. I remember seeing signs about it a few years back. I'll be skipping this year b/c I just can't be on my feet that much :(

Yes I also don't really feel like having people shrieking in my ear and pushing me around when the chainsaw guys pop up.  Normally?  Sure, it's fun!  At 33-34 weeks pregnant, not so much.

Yeah, I remember seeing signs saying this at the one I went to last year.

I LOOOVE haunted houses, but I'm skipping out this year. I am going on a "spooky" hayride next weekend, though.

  • Wow I didn't realize it could be a bad idea.  They are all walk through houses, and not ride houses, so I wasn't even considering they could be dangerous.  I'm going to talk to my doctor and see was she thinks.  I may have to see if any of my friends will be going to the Tops Field Fair and go to that instead.
  • As someone who WORKS at a haunted house, i may be able to give you a slightly different view.

Most places say they are not recommended for pregnant women, but I know we have had several come through and if they're comfortable doing so, we do not stop them. There are some things you should be aware of before making your decision, however.

    a) other people...if you go through with a group, there's a chance that someone in the group could be scared and either run into you or flail about and hit you

    b) props...I went to another local haunted house last year that had this mechanical thing that was just supposed to jump out at you, but my group was too far to one side and it hit me square on the side of my stomach. It didn't hurt, and I didn't think twice about it because we weren't even TTC at that point, but I will NOT be going to that haunt this year incase that thing is still there

    c) the layout..I know our haunted house has some duck-under areas, a claustrophobia tunnel (it's like two giant air bags that squeeze you as you walk between them) and a dark maze..I have no problem with the dark maze as I've learned the layout in the 4 yrs I've worked there, and I know how to cheat in the claustrophobia tunnel to make more space for myself, but the duck-unders would be almost impossible for me at this point in my pregnancy...and there are other haunts in our area that require you to crawl and I couldn't do that either

    d) special effects...some haunts use scented fog in their fog machine (we will be this year) and/or strobe lights or vortex tunnels. I don't know how the smell of the fog will bother me, but I know that sometimes pregnant women are more sensitive to smells and it could make you feel ill. With strobes and vortex tunnels, they are meant to make you feel disoriented and if your sense of balance is already off (mine gets to be more and more so as I get bigger), you run the risk of falling

All that being said, I went through a haunt a couple of months ago (they were having a Friday the 13th preview) and did fine. Your dr will probably advise you NOT to go, because they have some liability if they tell you it's ok and then you have a problem. Basically, IMHO, it's a personal choice...you know your body and your abilities in this point of the pregnancy better than anyone else.. I know that while I will not be working IN the house this year (too much risk of being hit in the belly), I will be working outside the haunt and will be going through the house several times this year, as well as a couple of the other area haunts assuming I feel up to it.
