Failed the one hour Gestational Diabetes test

I took it yesterday and received a call this morning that I had failed the test.  :(  I am going back in first thing tomorrow morning to do another (2 hour) one.  Fingers crossed I pass it.

Anyone else here fail the first to go on and pass the second?  Or alternatively, does anyone have GD and can tell me about it?  I googled it...bad idea.  Most things are positive, but then I read about still births and good chance of a c-section etc.

I know this has been posted a million times, but I looked and couldn't find any previous posts about it.

  • Failed my one hour too. I'm gettting my 3 hour done right now actually. I'm not going to lie, its not the worst thing ever, but not all that pleasant either. Try to do it in the morning because you have to fast for it at least I did. The worst thing about it is that they stick you 4 times. Annoying. Bring something to do, because its a long wait. Also, I was chatting with the lab tech and she said that so many places in my area are opting now to do just the 3 hour because so many people are failing the 1 hour. It makes much more sense instead of having to do it twice. IMO.

  • I just took and passed the 3 hour one yesterday after 'failing' the 1 hour one the week before.  It's not fun to get poked with the needle so many times, but worth it to know everything's ok.  I also took the 1 hour in the afternoon and wondered if that played a big factor.  The 3 hour was first thing in the morning.
  • I failed the one hour two weeks ago on a Monday (after fasting Sun since 9pm) and had to do the three hour that Friday. Passed no problem, and although it was not a fun experience I'm thankful it's over with. I really don't know why they bother with 1 hr tests anymore given the high failure rate. Good luck!

  • Failed the one hour, passed the 3 hour with flying colors. Watch your carbs and sugars. Eat meat, raw veggies, whole grains with a protein (ie high fiber, low carb bread with natural peanut butter), cheeses, fresh fruit with a protein (like apples with pb) but watch too much fruit. Limit potatoes and white grains. Also, exercise. Going for a 30 minute walk can drop your sugar levels by a lot. Lots of sugar free liquids too.

Really watch what you eat the night before your test, for my one hour I ate potatoes, apple slices, and some pasta the night before. DUMB, DUMB ME. For my 3 hour, I watched my foods carefully the two days before it and walked every evening after supper. Make sure you fast for 10-12 hours before your test as well. Mine was at 8am and I didn't eat/drink anything after 9pm (went to bed). You don't want to get a false result that you have it if you don't by eating the wrong foods before hand or not fasting, especially if you end up being borderline. All my draws had my sugars right where they should be and I was still told to watch my carbs and sugars since I had failed the one hour test, but I don't have to prick my fingers daily or deal with the weekly phone calls from our health plan nurse (someone who has never seen me, just works for our insurance company half way across the country) to "check up" on me.

  • I have GD.  I also had it with DD.  I managing it with diet and glyburide.  And there is a silver lining- I stopped gaining weight when I was dx with DD and haven't gained any weight THis time.

I did have a c-section with DD, but that was due to a low AFI which *could* have been due to the GD...or my age...or dumb luck.  I have vasa previa this time which has nothing to do with GD.

The worst part of GD is the needle sticks 4x a day.  And misses out on Fall goodies.  Thankfully, I have discovered Edy's SugarFree Fudge Tracks ice cream.  It is manna from heaven.

  • I failed the one hour and opted to not take the three hour.  So currently I'm testing my BG 4 times a day and watching what I eat.  For me, there wasn't a big change in lifestyle.  I already ate really healthy and didn't overeat.  The biggest problem I have is setting a timer to make sure I test my blood.  It's not bad.  I'd rather do that than subject myself and my baby to, IMO, a really unhealthy test.  I don't eat a lot of sugar and the one hour made me sick for days.  I'd rather poke myself than put something in my system that my daughter is also exposed to.  Just my two cents.

  • I failed my one hour, but passed the 3 hour test just fine. Be sure that you fast for 12 hours before the 3 hour test. I ate a few hours before my first test and I think that's why I failed- sorry that you have to sit through all of the blood draws again. It sucks :(

  • Thanks ladies!  After reading these posts and some further research about it I am feeling much better.  I'm a FTM so all of this is very new/scary to me.  I just want my baby to be okay.
