We are going on vacation in March and DS will be 8 months. We will be flying to San Francisco. I know I am thinking about this way in advance but I can't decide if I should try to bring DS's car seat and gate check it or rent one from the car rental place. We have a layover both ways that is about 1 hour long and I can't imagine trying to lug the big car seat through the airport, but I don't know if I want to rent one from the car place. Also, what would I do about the base if we bring our own?
Lastly, if we rent a seat, I looked on the hertz site (where we are getting the car) and it says their infant seat is only for up to 20 pounds and then you get a front facing convertible seat. DS is already about 13 pounds do you think he will be too big for the infant seat? I don't know if I like the idea of a front facing seat at 8 months.
Edit: We are planning to bring an umbrella stroller since he will be a little older so the car seat will not attach to the stroller. Will they let you gate check two seperate things?
Re: Plane travel with LO
Baby BOY is due May 23, 2014!
I am taking her on a trip in November and taking my own carseat. It also attaches to my stroller, so I'll need it until she's a little older for the stroller. It will also be easier to travel with a seat that I'm familiar with. Instead of adjusting the seat, reading the manual etc when I'm tried after a long flight.
If you do choose to rent one from the car rental company, I am sure they are fine. They wouldn't rent out damaged ones. I would select the car seat closer to the date of traveling. You can't really know what size he will be when he is 8 months. You shouldn't have to book it so early.
I'd probably only rent if I had a really long trip and needed to reduce the stuff I'm carrying. If you are just hoping on a plane, it should be easy to bring your seat.
