Swaddle breaking graduates

Tell me your stories.  How was it for you?  We just made it through night #3 and it sucks.

Re: Swaddle breaking graduates

  • We did one arm out for a while, and then both out and now sleep sack. He started sleeping on his side around the same time, and actually sleeps better now.

  • We went from the swaddle to the Magic Sleep Suit and it was an awesome and easy transition. Then he learned to roll in the sleep suit a few weeks ago (and would get stuck on his belly) so we switched him to just pajamas. He has a little trouble but not awful. He added in another wake up last week and I tried a sleep sack which has seemed to help..... So, no real advice seeing as we just go from one sleep crutch to another!

  • It was terrible. We only unswaddled because she started rolling to belly in it and that freaked us out so we had to unswaddle cold turkey one night. After that one terrible night I gave in and took out the rock n play again and she slept in that for every nap and every night for a month. I am weak.

The transition from rock n play to crib (she started sitting up really far in the rnp and it freaked us out) was way less sucky than I expected actually. She would not go to sleep night one, it took hours to get her down. She was freaking out, flailing arms and legs etc. BUT once she went to sleep the rest of the night was pretty normal and each night after (until like 1 week later when 4 mo wakeful hit..sigh).

Man I miss sleeping for long periods of time uninterrupted.

  • We swaddled one arm out a few nights, then the other arm out a few nights, and repeated that twice or so.. We were very gradual. Then she started rolling so we immeadiately did Both arms out but still had a very tight swaddle around her mid section. We were using the halo sleep sacks with swaddle. Then we switched to just sleep sack without a problem. I had read that sometimes more mobile babies get frustrated with the sack because their legs get tangled and I noticed thst with D do last night was just fleece footie pjs and she did great!

  • DD was a tough cookie. We were already doing one arm out and she slept great so we attempted cold turkey and it sucked. We did only her legs for awhile and it was mildly better. When we finally stopped the legs a couple weeks later she kept rolling on her stomach at night and crying - that lasted maybe a week? Overall it wasn't a great few weeks, but did eventually get better.

DS we went cold turkey the same night we moved him from the bassinet to the PnP and it was like nothing changed, he did fine.

  • We stopped about a month ago when Grayson rolled over on his face and was planking in the swaddle.   For the next week he would thrash around like a maniac turning over and over and over waking himself up.....Then one night, he just started sleeping normal again.   He still rolls and moves around, but it doesn't wake him up anymore.  It was a rough week :(  I feel for you dixee!

  • Thanks for posting this Dixee, and for everyone else for your replies!  DD is still swaddled every night.  I'm scared to mess with something that works, but all good things must come to an end, right?!?  Tongue Tied

ETA:  What is this magic sleep suit some of you speak of?  I've heard it mentioned before, but I have NO idea what it is....anyone?

  • We went straight from swaddle to magic sleep suit and haven't had a single problem with nighttime sleep.

For naps, we just went cold turkey to a sleep sack, and they're a little more challenging. She doesn't sleep more than 35 min or so and sometimes it takes her forever to fall asleep.

  • I got a Magic Sleep Suit from Ruby. It worked awesome for the few nights we used it! Then I realized it's probably too small for her. And that we would eventually want to break her of THAT, so I abandoned the idea and went back to swaddling. A few nights back, we decided to just go cold turkey and learned she prefers side/belly sleeping, but still wakes up a bunch of times a night.

Weird thing is, she is napping BEAUTIFULLY in her PNP now! Up to the day we started to swaddle-break, she was catnapping in her bouncer. So, I'm thinking maybe she's cold and I need to get a sleep sack.

  • We did a very slow swaddle weaning. I was using the miracle blanket and started by putting her in footie pjs and just swaddling her arms. She slept really well like that and then we did the one arm out for a couple nights, then the other arm out, then completely off. It was pretty smooth. Good luck!

Oh no! I was afraid it would be too small for her. Bummer. I hope your sister (?) will be able to use it.

Also, V ended up being a belly sleeper too. She goes into a footie sleeper and then a sleep sack and it works well for us. She doesn't STTN though, but she never did swaddle or not.

  • We went from swaddle to sleep sack the same night we moved her to her crib, about two weeks ago. She must have been ready because she hasn't slept worse. I can see hee starttle but resettle herself.
