Plane travel with LO

We are going on vacation in March and DS will be 8 months. We will be flying to San Francisco. I know I am thinking about this way in advance but I can't decide if I should try to bring DS's car seat and gate check it or rent one from the car rental place. We have a layover both ways that is about 1 hour long and I can't imagine trying to lug the big car seat through the airport, but I don't know if I want to rent one from the car place. Also, what would I do about the base if we bring our own?

Lastly, if we rent a seat, I looked on the hertz site (where we are getting the car) and it says their infant seat is only for up to 20 pounds and then you get a front facing convertible seat. DS is already about 13 pounds do you think he will be too big for the infant seat? I don't know if I like the idea of a front facing seat at 8 months.

Edit: We are planning to bring an umbrella stroller since he will be a little older so the car seat will not attach to the stroller. Will they let you gate check two seperate things?

Re: Plane travel with LO

  • I flew with Meredith last week and it went great. We gate checked both the car seat and stroller. The car seat connects to the stroller, so it worked out well to easily move around the airport. We rented a car and we did not bring the base. Our car seat has other straps that can can be secured with just the seat belt. It is not as easy to use as the base, but it worked fine. Not sure about your other question, but I would guess your baby wouldn't be 20 pounds at 8 months.

Baby BOY is due May 23, 2014!

  • I am taking her on a trip in November and taking my own carseat. It also attaches to my stroller, so I'll need it until she's a little older for the stroller.  It will also be easier to travel with a seat that I'm familiar with.  Instead of adjusting the seat, reading the manual etc when I'm tried after a long flight.

If you do choose to rent one from the car rental company, I am sure they are fine.  They wouldn't rent out damaged ones.  I would select the car seat closer to the date of traveling.  You can't really know what size he will be when he is 8 months.  You shouldn't have to book it so early.

I'd probably only rent if I had a really long trip and needed to reduce the stuff I'm carrying.  If you are just hoping on a plane, it should be easy to bring your seat.

  • When we gate check our stroller/ carseat (we use a snap n go) they are separate, so I'm sure you can gate check yours. I would bring a carseat. I've heard horror stories about renting a carseat so I would rather be safe than sorry!
