Now that we are all back at work, how are things going for you?
I finally got used to my hectic schedule of 5 classes in a row with no break. I'm starting to find my groove and things are getting easier. My classes are huge, but overall, the kids are really good and I'm enjoying them. I'm so glad I no longer pump at work. I'm enjoying having lunch with my friends without having to rush.
Re: for the teachers
Right now I'm student teaching but it's been quite the ride so far.
I started off with a male High School History teacher, after one week he got suspended because a stalker ex-student of his was emailing him and told him she loved him, missed him, wanted to kiss and hug him again, blah blah blah. Well he told administration and they suspended him and am now investigating the situation. So, for a week I worked with a bunch of different substitutes with no lesson plans from the teacher. It was pretty interesting and I think I did a pretty good job of doing what he would have wanted.
Now, this week my coordinator moved me to a middle school instead since the teacher might not be back for awhile. The woman I am working with now is really nice but older. It's been a pretty easy transition since I was working with mostly 9th graders and now I'm with 8th graders, honestly they're not too different.
And lab, I kind of have the opposite problem as you. We have three sections but then have planning period, lunch, A/C support (no talking or teaching, just reading), and then homeroom (no talking or teaching, just doing homework) and then have two more sections. It's kind of nice but I also get bored and want to nap.
How's it going for you lab?
It's crazy, but it always is when teaching 2nd grade. We are teaching a new math program that I don't like that much, using new Lang Arts curriculum that links to the Common Core and it's very different from how we used to teach Lang Arts. I don't like the beginning of the year as I feel like there are so many assessments and things we have to do that it takes a long time to actually get into the real routine of things.
Our schedule is pretty good, even though the kids are in the room from 8:30-11:50 and we are all ready for a break by then. The afternoon does fly by. Just trying to get into the routine so I don't have to bring stuff home with me too often.
I'm not teaching much anymore, but I'll add my 2 cents
I'm teaching 1 afternoon a week for a group of home-school students. I have 3 classes (K/1, 2/3 grade, 4/5/6 grade) and it's been a bit of an adjustment teaching these students. I'm finding that homeschooled students have different skills and abilities than traditional students...not better or worse...just, different.
I'm using a lot of the same elementary Spanish curriculum that I wrote when I was teaching full time, so planning has been great, too.
TiffJ21~What a crazy way to start student teaching!! I hope your new placement goes well! How many semesters of student teaching do you need? Will you be looking for a job second semester?
Yes it's definitely been crazy, I've learned a lot though!
I've already done my pre-internship so once I finish this semester of student teaching I will graduate in December. I will probably just substitute next semester since I'm due in April, not sure a school would hire me if they knew I would need to take that time off.
That. Is. Crazy. WOW!!! Kind of makes you want to run away from this profession, huh!? Hope things get back to normal for you.
I'm getting into the swing of it finally. It looks like this will be the first weekend I won't need to come to school to get caught up on copying, planning, and posting grades. This year we have a para that volunteered to help grade papers, so I am very grateful, otherwise I'd have a ton to do at home.
Even though I'm in a routine now, I still hate Sunday nights when I think how I have to do it all over again. Getting the kids out the door, leaving them at daycare, rushing around all day, (except while pumping - like now), rushing out the door to pick up my babies, nursing, dinner, baths, bed.
On a separate note, those teachers who've started new programs, I'm curious what they are.
I agree exactly with all the rushing around. I hate it. It's why I love weekends so much- I get a chance to take a step back and breathe.
Most of the entire state of Texas adopted a new curriculum called C-Scope, that is helping us to align with the new end of course exams that will start for all high school students next year. They are being phased in now and are much more difficult than the previous standard exams we were required to use for accountability. My classes will take them next year, but we implemented the new curriculum now to test it out.
I'm also using interactive notebooks this year, which has been a really great tool so far and is actually making my life much easier in terms of grading. I highly recommend them! Just google interactive notebooks and you'll find all sorts of great stuff.
