Progesterone to prevent pre-term labor?

My doctor talked to me about doing either weekly progesterone injections or nightly progesterone suppositories to help prevent preterm labor this time around.  DS was born at 34w6d.  I was just wondering if anyone has done this.

  • I did the shots with my last pregnancy and the plan is to start them again next week this pregnancy. There are lots of studies that show they really help....good luck!!

  • I have done the suppositories since 27w5days. Doctor said I'll stop it at 36 weeks. I have had any side effects only the yucky leakage sometimes but nothing a liner doesn't take care of.

  • I started taking them about a week ago and I haven't noticed any side effects either...and if it will help prevent ptl I'm down with the leakage!

  • I'm on the weekly injections now and so far so good. I had lots of contractions the night before I started and nothing noteworthy since, so I'm thinking they are working!

  • I've been on the weekly injections since 15 weeks and I'll be 27 weeks tomorrow. I haven't had any side effects either and the shots aren't all that bad.

  • DS 1  was born at 33 4 and I've done the sots this time around. I had some challenges at 29 weeks and it was attributed to not getting my shot in 7 days ( the acceptable time is 5-9 days).  My last shot is next week and other than my one issue I think they've really helped!

  • After two preterm births, we opted to do the shots this time.  I had to get them every 5-7 days (9 was too long and I would start to contract).  Here I am, 39+ weeks and still pregnant.  I would say that is a success.

I wanted to try to nightly suppositories first, but my Dr said the injections have been shown to be more successful.  I wanted the best odds, so I went with the shots.  Not sure of the medicial proof behind that statement.

  • Thanks again for the responses.  I was pretty sure I would take the progesterone.  I'm leaning more towards the injections.  It's just reassuring to hear from other moms.

  • I had weekly shots with my last and will be doing them again starting at 16 weeks!! They made me have my first miracle so I'm praying it will do the same this time
  • We did the cream with our first pregnancy and had no positive results with it, second pregnancy we did the injections and I had preterm labor contractions like crazy! I don't think it helped me personally at all bug I know women who say it helped. I have been using grapefruit oil because I heard it helps increase progesterone and I love grapefruit
  • I'm only about 9 wks and I started the progesterone (oral) last week. As long as we see a heart beat at the US on Tuesday, I get to start the heparin injections. This is my fourth pregnancy (1 healthy son <3) and the first time I've tried these medications.
