Let's talk about the MMR vaccine

Forgive me if this has already been discussed, I've been MIA quite a bit lately. I was just talking to a coworker and she said she's heard awful things about the MMR vaccine. Does anyone have light to shed on this subject? Jack's appointment is next Friday and if it's terrible I'd consider skipping it, but I don't know if he can go to daycare without it.

Re: Let's talk about the MMR vaccine

  • yeah, we may or may not have run a low fever a week after but that could've been due to teething.

If you are concerned i think you can split the vaccines up. I would not skip them though. They are pretty important.

  • J just got his yesterday.  It is a more painful shot when injected, so he cried more than usual.  And typically his shots make him sleepy, but he was a little uncomfortable and couldn't fall asleep for a few hours after, and got up about 4 times last night (compared to his usual one time).

Side effects can show anywhere from 10-14 days afterwards, with a fever, rash, etc.

Let's just say it's not one of the most fun visits.

  • My pedi said to look for a rash and fever 10 days after the shot. He said it isn't a big deal, but he would like me to call if it happens so he can access the situation.

IMO, vaccines do have risks, however not vaccinating has even larger risks. I would not consider delaying or avoiding vaccines due to the possible side effects (unless your LO has a medical reasons and your doctor brings it up).

  • I wouldn't skip the MMR, as outbreaks of measles have been increasing in the US:  https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6115a1.htm?s_cid=mm6115a1_w

And anything you might hear about a link between MMR and autism has been completely unfounded.  Just google Andrew Wakefield if you want to know more about the controversy.

Yes, this. Measles, mumps, and rubella are far worse than the slight fever that your LO MIGHT but probably won't experience. There's now an epidemic of measles in France thanks to parents skipping their vaccs and people are dying.
My D had no reaction, other than crying her cute little head off when she actually got the shot.
  • Yeah, I wouldn't skip it. But if you are like us, and are scheduled for 4 shots that day, maybe spacing them out would be better. Talk to you pedi. T was sick, but it was from something else. Ever since getting the antibiotics for that, she's been fine. So if it weren't were her ear infections, I would say she got uncomfortable and had a small fever. But other than that, we were Aok!

  • Max has had a slight fever and a little rash all week. It really hasn't bothered him much. I'm not sure if it is from the vaccine or teething. I'd much rather have this little reaction than have him get something worse.
  • L got the MMR on Monday.  I was definitely more nervous about this shot than the others.  So far, so good.   She was completely herself all day after the shot.  She woke up the next morning with a runny nose, but I think it's because she's teething like crazy this week.  We were also told to watch for a fever and/or rash 6-14 days out.

  • Halle is running a slight fever and is cranky ... Still far better than the alternative!
