December 2011 Moms

Teething is an a--hole.

About 5 weeks ago Alex started having trouble sleeping at night. He woke up every hour and one of us would have to hold him for half the night in order to get some sleep. Finally, about a week and a half ago, his very first tooth started to come through! We got 3 glorious nights of only waking once, it was heavenly.

3 days ago it all started over again. Now I see a second line on his nottom gum.

Please tell me it won't be lik ethis for every single tooth? What happens when he gets his molars? I don't even want to think about it.

  • Awww! What a great picture! Smile

I agree, teething is the devil. There's pretty much no other way to describe it. Charlotte definitely gets cranky and miserable when she has teeth coming through. At the moment, she has four coming through. It's kind of ridiculous.

Hopefully A will give you guys a break as he starts to get used to the feeling of teeth coming in. The first one was the absolute worst for us.

  • Oh man, DS has been doing the same thing and had horrible sleep regression for about the same amount of time.  No teeth yet here, but I hope it is right on the horizon and then I'm able to get a few nights of wonderful sleep!!

  • I so agree with the title of this post!

DS just cut his second tooth and it was soooo much worse than the first one. His first one was a bottom tooth and his second one is a top tooth (right on top of the first one) so I don't know if that makes a difference...

  • E is currently working on six at once, and honestly we had one or two bad nights in the last few weeks, but I was surprised with how well he was coping.

The first two (late May / early June) were the worst for everyone.  Now I feel like I know the signs / symptoms of teething earlier, so I can start giving him things to help him cope earlier.  I've also learned what works for him and what doesn't.  I also give ibuprofen on the worst nights, and that really makes him comfortable.  E is also getting used to symptoms of teething, so he is coping much better.

Teething is the devil, and it turns good babies bad, but I think the first few teeth are the worst (at least that has been our experience).

  • I hear that it's supposed to get easier for them, but I'm not sure I believe it yet.  DS got his bottom two and then we had a few weeks of peace and now the top two are coming in and it started all over again with the crabbiness and waking up crying needing to be held.  I have a feeling that the first few years are going to be like this--off and on as all of the mean @hole teeth come in.

    Holy crap! Poor E!

I am glad that it's getting easier for you though, that gives me hope! What are you giving him besides ibuprofen? We are doing the frozen washcloths and he is wearing an amber teething necklace, but I am not sure if that really helps. Lots of love, distraction and things to chew on seem to help a lot during the day. He is surprisingly happy, just the nights are bad.

  • I agree night time teething is an a-hole. A is as happy as can be in the day time. She's an independent little trooper. Loves when I brush her gums or rub them with an ice cube wrapped in a cloth. Doesn't complain at all during the day.

Nights are rough for several reasons but teething is high on the list at the moment. tooth 2 broke through on Sunday. We have many teeth to go.

Washcloth during the day, also ice cubes in his mesh feeder.  He wears the amber necklace, but I'm not sure if it helps either.  I just don't want to take it off in case it does!  Lots of cold foods, frozen banana ice cream.  Nighttimes if he has trouble we start with teething tablets.  If they don't help we move to ibuprofen.  We only had to give him ibuprofen once with this last set, he had one night where he was up three times between 8-10pm, so we finally gave the ibuprofen and he slept until 5am.  I don't like giving meds, but they do help as a last resort.  You could just tell he was uncomfortable and tired.

  • rocky, we gave him ibuprofen a couple of times, too. it seems to help for a few hours, but he's still up 3 or 4 times on those nights. Yesterday he only woke once, so let's hope that it's over for now with those horrible nights!
