IVF: can someone tell me what these pills are for?

i didn't have these during my last IVF attempt (nor did i take any during any other cycle), but they came with my meds the other day.  I will obviously ask at my baseline, but any info would be helpful:

estrace

methylprednisolone

doxycycline hyclate

Re: IVF: can someone tell me what these pills are for?

  • Estrace is estrogen (I'm on it now for my FET), and Doxy is an antibiotic. Those are the 2 I know.

  • methylprednisole is a low grade steroid to help with inflammation. I started taking it the day of my trigger shot.

doxycycline is an antibiotic that I start taking tonight (night of ER) through the ET.

  • Estrace can be used to suppress your ovaries if taken before the stims (estrogen priming), and to support/thicken your lining if taken during or after your stim start. It also comes in injection and patch form and the pills can be inserted or taken orally. YMMV.

Methylprednisolone (aka Medrol)  is a corticosteroid and aids implantation. Most often Rx between ER and ET.

Doxy is an antibiotic to prevent infection from the ER and ET, but mainly ER.

  • Everything PP have said. I was also told that the medrol lowers the immune response and helps prevent rejection of the embryo, particularly when ICSI or AH are used. And it tastes TERRIBLE.

I took all three at various points, along with dexamethasone to lower cortisol levels.

  • I have the same meds.

Doxy I started taking two days before ER  - day of trigger shot

Estrace I start 2 days post ER ( Saturday )

and same with Methylpred. the steroid to stop inflammation

It really is one of the worst pills I've ever taken - why can't they coat the outside with something?!   I find some juice helps - but only a little bit... YUCK - just thinking about it!

  • For the medrol...I found that chewing up a bunch of crackers or bread, then inserting it into the middle of the chewed up lump and swallowing it quickly seemed to work best.

I agree that they should coat it. With something nice tasting. Like Advil.

  • Yep, yep on the tasting bad. I would put apple sauce in my mouth, then the pill and swallow.

     Methylpred. decreases inflammation.

Doxy can make you nauseated so definitely take with food. I also found I had to take it in the middle of a meal, not at the beginning or end.
