Re: Leila/Layla/Laila

  • I hate it, but that's JMO. I have never seen the spelling Laila.

If I had a gun to my head, I'd go with Layla.

  • My friend named her daughter Laila. That's how I'm used to seeing it, even before my friend used the name.

  • I kind of like it - I slightly prefer Leila to Layla, but like both. I think my first image is of the Eric Clapton song - which isn't bad.

  • It's ok, NMS but not horrible. I prefer Leila and I believe that this is the proper spelling, but i'm not 100% on that.
  • Hey fellow Jan Mom! I love the name. It's a common Moroccan name, and I know and love a few Lailas (the American Moroccans spell it that way). Here's the thing, everyone will call her "Lee-la" if you spell it Leila. Laila is a nice alternative spelling, but I think of Layla as the yankee spelling. So, I say either Laila or Layla is good :)

  • I quite like this name.  I personally more drawn to Layla just because I think it reads easier to the eye, but then most people would probably loop you in with the 'y' trend. Which doesn't bother me, but it might you.
  • My friend's daughter is Leila and I like it.

I can only think of the Eric Clapton song when I see "Layla" to be honest.

  • I actually really like it. And I'm okay with all the spellings. I think that Leila is the most pleasing to me, but people might try to pronounce it LEE-la. So I'd be okay with the other two.

  • First of all, why on earth would Leila be pronounced Lee-La?

    image

This is a picture of a LEI.  This is not pronouced "lee".  It is a "lay".  So - Lei = Lay.  And Leila = Lay-la.  People who say lei = lee confuse the crap out of me.

OP, my dog's name is Leila.  I like the name, but I will warn you that we have met oodles of other dogs with this name over the years.

I obviously prefer the Leila spelling.  And fwiw, the vet and other people who read my dog's name have never pronounced it wrong.

Actually I know a Leila that pronounces it Lee-la so my first instinct is to use that pronunciation.

  • I like the name ( was on my list but DH doesn't like it). I woudl go with Layla because of the Clalpton song. I feel like the others look like to many vowels at first glance. Maybe that's weird, but that's what I see.

  • I've never loved Layla - it's just a little bit too seductress for my taste.  I like Lila (which I would pronounce Lie-la, and maybe that's how you would pronounce Leila?).  If so, then I would go for this option.

  • I personally LOVE the name.

    Would go with Leila, myself.

  • I really like the name. I prefer the Layla spelling myself.

  • This name is NMS, but since that's not really helpful... Leila - can go either way (lay-la or lee-la) for me Layla - don't love extra "y"s, so hate this spelling Laila - in many cultures, this is the same pronunciation as "Lila" If you want her name to be lay-la, I would go with Leila.
  • Layla is the original spelling according to behindthename. All the others are variants and can be pronounced several different ways. I like Layla and would use that spelling personally so I wouldn't have pronunciation issues.

  • I almost named my daughter this using the spelling Layla. Who cares what the so called "correct" spelling is, it's your child. I came on this board awhile back and people can be extremely rude then your just asking for a bit of advice.
I ignored all the rude comments and went with what I wanted. I named my daughter Jocelynn....yep with 2 "n" :0 the apparently incorrect spelling of her name.
