Its a boy!~ Successful epi free induction story!

Hey Ladies! I just wanted to share the news! We welcomed Luke Todd into the world on Monday, Sept. 17th after a successful induction! He was 5lbs 12oz, 19" long, born at exactly 38 weeks.

For those of you who missed my post last week,  I had been measuring small, so I had a growth ultrasound done last Thursday to check on measurements. Baby was only measuring in the 6th percentile for growth at 5lbs 3oz, so they decided to induce at 38weeks. My doctor thought that my placenta may have stopped fuctioning properly, which could have been the reason for the growth resrticition. I was a good canidate for induction, as I was already 2cm and 50% effaced. I was really hoping to go into labor on my own over the weekend. I had a few irregular contractions, and a lot of braxton hicks, but nothing significant.

I went to L&D on Monday morning, doc was able to break my water, and we waited about an hour to see if contractions started on their own. Nothing really happened, so I was given a low dose of pitocin to get things moving. Unfortunatly, I had to be monitored constantly, since there was an increased risk that the baby could not tolerate strong contractions due to the IUGR. I was hooked up to a movable monitor attached to the IV, so I was at least able to walk around the room, and use the birthing ball.

Once contactions started, they came on fast and strong. In comparison to my last labor, which was spontaneous, I would say that the pitocin contractions were no worse than the natural ones. After about 3 hours of contactions about 2-3mins apart, they checked me and I was only 4cm. I was so discouraged, and was starting to get really tired. They upped my pitocin amount, and I was able to eat a little Italian ice, which gave me a little bit of an energy boost. Contractions quickly started getting even more intense, I started to get very shakey, and threw up a few times. At this point, I knew labor was progressing fast. They checked me again and I was 7cm. Contractions were now only a minute apart, and extremely painful. I almost asked for the epidural, but I knew I was close to the end, and just wanted it to be over!

All of the sudden I had a strong urge to push. They quickly called the doc in, and I was already 10cm. They rushed around getting the room ready, and after only about 3-4 big pushes baby Luke was out! He had the cord wrapped around his neck, which was very scary, but the doc was able to cut it before the rest of his body was delivered.

The actual pushing was much less painful than the transitioning contactions, and I am so pleased that I was able to go without an epi this time. I had a 2nd degree tear, but other than that recovery is going very well!

Luke is doing great, he was quite a bit bigger than expected, and the doc said that the placenta looked fine upon examination, so they think that I must just make small babies! Given this fact, the induction was probably not totally necessary, but it was better to be safe than sorry!

Thanks so much for reading this far, I will try to post a pic in the next post, lets hope it works!
