Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Skin Issues: Hoping someone can help!

My son had a rash on his right cheek that is raised, scaly and sometimes oozes. It does not seem to itch or bother him. I'm not sure exactly how long it's been there because it seems that the baby acne faded and this showed up, he has never had clear skin! At his 2 month appointment his pedi thought it was cradle cap that had migrated to his face as he also had spots behind his ears on his shoulders and on the tops of his forearms. He advised me to use 1% hydrocortisone on it for a few days to clear it up. We did that and it did clear up but then just came right back as soon as we stopped the steroids. image Eventually his arms and shoulders cleared, but his face and the backs of his ears are still inflamed. I was hesitant to use the steroid cream again so I just started moisturizing him with California baby Calendula cream and hoped it would clear on its own. Fast forward to now he is almost 7 months old and it still looks like this. I took him to a dermatologist who diagnosed it as eczema. I wasn't sure about that since he doesn't have it in any of the classic places eczema usually occurs such as behind the knees and in the creases of his elbows. He prescribed a prescription steroid cream and told me to apply it twice a day followed by cerave cream for a week. As before with the OTC steroid cream it cleared beautifully and within a few days of stopping it was right back as bad as ever. I use free and clear detergent for everything and extra rise all of our laundry and wash him with CA baby super sensitive wash. I tried cetaphil for a while at the doctors recommendation but never saw any change between that and the CA baby so I went back to that since it is more natural and paraben free. sooo.... I'm just hoping that someone has experienced something like this and has any advice for what cleared it for them. I feel like we're the only ones! Thanks for reading!

  • It does look like eczema to me.  DD had it on the backs of her hands and she didn't have it in the "classic" spots, either.  The Calendula cream seemed to help her a lot.  We would use the hydrocortizone whenever there was a flare-up, and once it was clear we put the Calendula cream on 2x/day.  California Baby also makes a Calendula shampoo/body wash if you want to try that.  We also did some just general anti-allergy measures like putting allergen-proof covers on DD's pillows and mattress, cleaning out some of the 6,000 stuffed animals that were in her room, putting in an air filter, etc.  We also started her on probiotics.  Perhaps coincidence, but things got better once we did all of that.  Good luck!

I have been considering trying a probiotic. Which one do you use?

  • DD was a toddler by the time we started the probiotics, so we gave her a chewable one (Culturelle).  I have heard Bio Gaia drops are good for babeis.

  • Is your son BF or FF? If BF, try cutting out dairy and eggs from your diet. If FF talk with your Dr about a nondairy formula. I would suggest a goat milk formula. The pro biotic we use is a powder, I either put it in a bottle or mix it with his morning veggie. I'm sorry you and you're LO are going through this, I hope it clears up soon.

Thank you, I am breastfeeding and have already cut out dairy, I will try eggs as well and see if it helps.

  • Definitely looks like eczema. We've been dealing with it since DS was about 3 mo old. Moisturize as much as possible and keep experimenting to see what works best for your LO. For us, swimming once a week has made a huge difference (similar effect of the recommended treatment of bleach baths I think). I cut out dairy and eggs but it made no difference.

  • My son has the same thing on his cheek right now. We've done the steroid cream and all of the lotions but one of the things that has seemed to work well also is Neosporin. The one I have has an antibiotic in it- I don't know if that makes a difference or not. We switch between that, Babo Calendula cream and steroid cream so we're hitting it about 5-6 times a day.

Thank you for sharing! I hope both our little ones have smooth rosy cheeks soon!
