what's the difference between discharge and mucus plug?

in 3rd Trimester
some women lose it all at once and some women lose it in pieces, but how do you know the difference between your regular discharge and the actual mucus plug? is the consistency or color different or something? probably a stupid question, but now that i'm getting closer to delivery, i just want to know everything lol.

    When my mucous plug started coming out it looked more like what comes out of my nose when I have a cold. That's the only way I can explain it. Mine came out in pieces. I never had the huge tampon sized all at once that I've heard others say they've had. That's the only way I knew it was something different.

    I lost a small part the day before (felt funny all day) it was a lot thicker and just had a different apperance. That night (or early morning) I knew I had lost it completly-- with contractions. It was quite large and "plopped" when I peed. (sorry TMI)

    Exactly - mine came out in pieces, and was a darker brown colour (sometimes some red in it), but literally looked like a long piece of snot.  I don't mean to sound 'whatever' about it, but I can honestly say, that having experienced it, you'll definitley know when it's happening, it's a really super-obvious thing that is drastically different from your regular discharge.

    Easiest comparison - it's like comparing soup to spaghetti - really different both in colour and texture. Don't worry about it (I did and I wish I hadn't), everything will happen in due course when it's supposed to.  :)
