Unsanitary Pumping Conditions (at work)

So our "pumping room" at work is an unused office filled with old boxes, file cabinets, etc... and obviously no one goes in there to dust, etc... I try to be as clean as possible and not touch anything. Well the other day I went to grab the milk I pumped at the end of the day and it had a dead bug floating in it!! I had to pour it all down the drain, I was so pissed! I bet that little bugger flew in there at some point between taking the pump off my breast and putting the lid on the bottle. I obviously didn't see it, but I don't know how else that would have happened. It's so gross. But there is no where else for me to pump here at work. There wouldn't be a better location and I don't have an office (just a cubicle). I don't think the bathroom would be any better (germs)... so am I just *** out of luck?

Re: Unsanitary Pumping Conditions (at work)

  • Speak with HR, its required they provide a sanitary place to pump which is why suggesting to do it in the bathroom is against the law.

    Yes

Unfortunately, I will be bathroom bound for now because my employer is refusing to provide adequate break time for pumping.  I am dealing with HR as we speak.  Contact them ASAP.

  • I will talk to HR.... but I can picture them telling ME to clean it. Seriously.

its against the law for them to say that. Its a very fast law suit and very expensive for them.

  • Oh no!  that is terrible!  could you pump in your car?  (if you can find a secluded spot)

  • While they should provide a clean space, I don't think a bug qualifies as unsanitary.  I think my house is extremely clean and sanitary but we have random bugs occasionally.  Definitely talk to your HR; if there is a cleaning service cleaning the rest of the building, that room should be cleaned as well now that its in use.
