Tattoos and bfing?

I REALLY want a tattoo. I was supposed to get one the month I  found out we were expecting.

I know the milk bank I donated through wouldn't take donors who had gotten a tattoo within the last year. For obvious reasons they had very stringent guidelines.

I got mixed results when googling. Anyone know the answer?

  • I think its really up to your own discretion. I think it is discouraged because unclean practices can lead to serious viruses, and even clean work can get infected. If your trust the place that would be doing, they show you the needles being taken out of the pack before use, then see if your comfortable.

  • It isn't recommended.  The tattoo shop I went to actually asked that because they knew I had a toddler.  They said to wait if I was.

Waiting is tough though! I got mine a week after Kai was weaned, and a few weeks before finding out we were pregnant with Halle ... got there just in time.  Lol.

  • You guys are right, better safe than sorry and all that. Thanks for the replies.

Empire, sometimes I'm convinced I will be bfing forever. :)

  • My LC said it was fine.  The ink molecules are too large to transfer to BM.  Of course there are other things that can happen, but if you trust the artist.  After that, the main risk would be infection and at that point you could always not BF if an infection occurred.  I got a tattoo a couple months ago when DD was still nursing 2x/day.

ETA:  I did end up needing to go to a different artist than planned bc the first one won't tattoo BFers.
