Ergobaby Owners c'mere

I'm thinking of getting one.  I have the Moby and Baby Bjorn (both were gifts).  I like Baby Bjorn better but I have heard about the issues.  Anywho, I have a few questions.

Does the Ergobaby make you too feel to warm in the summer?

Are you using the newborn insert?  If not, when did you stop?

What's the longest you've worn it and did your back hurt?

 Which model do you have?

Thanks ladies!

Re: Ergobaby Owners c'mere

  • It was too warm with the infant insert, but not without it.

No. I stopped using it as a concession to the heat, when she was about 4 months, even though she hadn't reached the weight requirement. I did, however, continue using the butt cushion that's part of the insert, as she couldn't really see and it p!ssed her off.

I've worn it for a couple hours, hiking, and my back never hurt.

I have the organic one, not sure exactly which one, because it's on loan from my cousin.

ETA: After reading the above poster, I'm 5'4, but have a long torso, so that's why we needed the cushion.

  • I have the Original Ergobaby Carrier. I never used the newborn insert. We started putting DD in it around 3 months (she had excellent head control and was 14.5 lbs). I wore it for 6 hours one day at a motorcycle rally and my back didn't bother me at all (DD would have been about 15.5 lbs). I was quite sweaty when I took her off at the end of the day but it was a very hot day as well and I walked all day.
  • I love my Ergo!  I have the original version.  I don't think it feels hot at all.  I am not using the insert.  We never really used it because he didn't like being "strapped in".  We do use the cushion out of the insert though because otherwise he sits a little too low and can't look around (I catch him trying to peak underneath the strap to see what's going on).  I've worn it for up to an hour walking around shopping with him and it has never hurt my back at all.  It's so comfy.

The only drawback (and I only say this because DS is nosy and wants to see EVERYTHING Smile) is that you can't wear them forward facing in the Ergo.  It's not really an issue though as long as they're sitting high enough to see over the shoulder straps.

  • I have the Sport.  Chose it because it's supposed to be good for people of different heights.

Did not feel too warm in the summer.  I mean, yes, we got sweaty, but it's summer in DC.  You always get sweaty.

We used the newborn insert, but stopped after she had good head control.  We weren't huge fans of it--maybe we were using it incorrectly, but she seemed to sink a lot in it.  Also, once she started getting more active, it was hard to convince her to lie still and be the meat in the baby taco.

I've worn it for a few hours, and so has DH, and no back pain.  And he has a seriously messed up back.

    Thanks ladies!

I have the ergo organic too (the green one) - and recently I got a used original (powder blue) for DH and my babysitter to use. The organic  was too hot to wear with the infant insert but it's not too bad in the shade in the summer in SoCal (it's been getting really hot here lately.) I am definitely not comfortable for extended periods of time in the sun, but I stay out of the sun anyway for baby so it's a non-issue.

I met a woman at the farmer's market who lives in AZ and uses the sport version because it wicks moisture. I was going to look into getting one for hikes or camping. Those look really nice!

I am not using the newborn insert, we only used it a few times and DS hated it (hot!) and he ended up being too big for it very quickly.

My back has hurt with it but mostly it's from wearing it wrong (not having the straps be tight enough) or having bad posture/slumping forward. Any carrier will hurt if you do that. When I am mindful of these things, it's super comfy.

I am on the bigger side (it's all in the front - huge boobs and leftover preggo belly) and I imagine it would be more comfy on someone who was smaller, but I still think it's pretty darn comfy for a front carrier (haven't tried back yet) - and I have back issues!

  • We got an ergo for dh. I prefer a wrap. We bought it because the bjorn was beginning to be painful and uncomfortable. He likes the ergo so muh better than the bjorn. No issues or pains or discomfort. I tried it but I still prefer a wrap.

  • Does the Ergobaby make you too feel to warm in the summer? No, I used it all summer outside.

Are you using the newborn insert?  If not, when did you stop?  I never purchased the newborn insert.  Just used a receiving blanket to help with placement when he was smaller. (Didn't start using the Ergo until 3.5 months, before that I used a mei tai)

What's the longest you've worn it and did your back hurt?  4 hours; no back issues, he was 15 lbs.  I've even worn my 2.5 yr old in it who is 33 lbs using the hip carry and I didn't have any issues.

Which model do you have? Ergo Performance

  • Oh and I was going to add that DS gets more sweaty in it than the person carrying him -  but he doesn't seem to mind! Then again it could be the person carrying him getting sweaty and transferring the sweat. LOL. Either way, the baby doesn't seem to care and loves the snuggling.

  • I have the sport. I like it. It supposedly breathes better, but I haven't tried the others to compare. I bought the insert and regret it. He hated it when he was too small and he could handle the carrier alone pretty early ... 2 to 3 months. The only time my back hurt was when he was freaking out and demanded to be held but I had to clean the kitchen. So it was a lot of arm work with dishes and bending to the washer. We've been fine on long walks and hikes. I'm 5'5" and DH is 6'1".
