C-sections

Did they make you wipe your whole body down?

Had my pre-op appt today and OB gave me a big package of special wipes, I'm supposed to shower the night before, then use 2 wipes to wipe my whole body down, then not shower in the morning, and wipe down again.

I know they didn't wipe me down before my emergency c/s, what's the point in doing this for a RCS?  Is this common?

  • Nope.  I had a scheduled c-section, and no one said anything about cleaning my body before surgery.  I just took my normal morning shower.  A nurse did shave a little bit from my pubic hair line.

Honestly, I have never heard of someone having to go through the process you've described before having surgery.

Ok glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is weird! Thanks.

  • I just had a csection on Tuesday. I was supposed to have the section next Monday (rcs) but went into labr Tuesday morning. While they were prepping me or the surgery they did give me 2 wipes to wipe from my armpits all the way down my torso.  I didn't know anything about it though beforehand and hadn't been given the directions prior.  I do know that it is to reduc bacteria on your skin before surgery.
  • I have never heard of this but I have never had a scheduled c/s.

  • My friend had a rcs a few months ago at said they had her use the wipes for her body. I had an emergency c-section for my first and don't recall them wiping me down with anything. I go for my pre-op appt this morning. I am assuming I will have to do the wipes since I am delivering at the same hospital as my friend.

  • It's probably hibiclens, which is pretty standard for surgical pre-op. I don't think it's common for c/s, but it's common for most other surgeries. For a c/s it probably just depends on the OB and hospital. FWIW, they probably DID wipe you down before your c/s, just... faster =) Even in the most dire of emergencies they will throw some betadine on you before cutting.

As far as the point- just to cut down on bacteria and lessen the likelihood of an infection. It's not done before an emergency c/s, because generally the risk of infection is less than the risk of whatever the reason for the c/s is, but mostly because there is no time.  With a RCS, you have the time.

  • Thank you everyone! My Doula had never heard of it although I'm not sure how many RCS she attends lol. Glad to know I'm not the first person ever to be asked to do this :

  • I don't even have a pre-op appointment, I just need to be there 2 hours before the surgery.

  • I had a scheduled one and it was scheduled for 2pm. They had me shower using some special antiseptic soap when I came in. After that I got dressed in the lovely gown and had to stay in bed till the procedure.
  • its prep like any other surgery--I got the packet too but didnt have to use it as DS came 3 wks early :-)

  • Wow. I didn't have to do anything like that with my last RCS.  Mine was scheduled at 38wks but I went into labor at 37wks.  I don't remember any kind of wipe down.  But that was 3yrs ago and will be 4 by the time I have my next.  I'll ask my Dr. about this at my 1st prenatal appt. next Thurs.  Thanks ladies some info I was not aware of :-)
  • Yup! I had LO Thursday and they gave me six wipes.  One for down each arm, one for down each leg, one for wiping the area where they would be cutting, and oddly enough one for the area on my back exactly opposite of where theyd be cutting on the front.

  • I've had 3 scheduled c sections and never had to wipe down.  They have always washed and shaved the area prior to being moved to the OR, but that's it.
