Re: Those who have completed IA
I would say it's pretty accurate. Is your son coming in on a visa that would make him a citizen when he passes through customs? That's what both my boys had, but I know that children adopted from different countries receive different types of visas and some have to process paperwork after arriving.
In our case, we handed off out paperwork in the airport, and received M's certificate of citizenship in the mail somewhere between 4-6 weeks afterward. For J, we actually received it in just over 2 weeks, but that was because we had an issue with how his name would appear and I was in contact with USCIS from the day we landed trying to get it straightened out. The man in charge of the unit that processed it was truly amazing and sweet, and he rushed it through the process as soon as it came into his office "as a nice Easter present" (I reached him before the paperwork did, and he had them turn the certificate out the same day they received everything). If we hadn't had that contact, I doubt it would have happened nearly as fast.
Just out of curiosity, where's your family? Could you travel on your son's Russian passport? I still have both my sons' Peruvian passports, and they are still valid, so we could use them to travel if we wanted to.
we just adopted our son from Korea. He came home on a visa where we have to finalize the adoption in the US. Korea requires 6 months post placements visits, etc so we will finalzie after those are all done.
we got his green card about 10 days after we got home i think.... we can't apply for the COC until after finalization, which will be early next year (February or so). I know they say that the COC can takes months to process and recieve.
it all depends on how russian adoption works.
