Clothing question from a May 2013 mom

Lurker from May 2013 moms coming over with a question! We are due May 11, 2013 and I'm curious what everybody did in terms of seasonal clothing for NB to 0-3 months. Even though early May is spring, the weather can really go either way so I'm a bit overwhelmed on what will be needed right away. Long sleeves? Sleeveless summer rompers? I'm on the east coast btw. Any advice or suggestions on what kind of clothing to aim for during the very beginning would be so helpful!

Re: Clothing question from a May 2013 mom

  • I'm in Pittsburgh and we had a lot of short sleeve onsies with pants. If she got hot we just took off the pants. We ended up buying several light weight sleepers after she was born because she was more comfortable in them (and air conditioning became an issue in some settings). I think the key is to have layers just in case.

  • In the first few weeks, I dressed lo in pjs with a onsie and socks underneath.  I also usually put a hat on him.  Then if I was going out and for the summer, I would dress him according to whether we would be indoor or outdoors.  S/S romper type things were good for the heat or just a onsie and shorts.  Indoors, I would dress him with l/s because of the AC.  It's actually hard to say because sometimes the heat hits early in NY and other times not until later.  I would just be prepared for anything.

  • May was brutally hot this year in NY so DD was mostly in short sleeve onesies. But for a normal May, I think you would need both short and long.

  • I am in NH and used long sleeved footies for the cold days.  I used short sleeved onsies for the warmer days.  He was swaddled for the first 2-3 months so that also added a layer of warmth.  You never know what the weather will be like, so it is good to have a little of both.  Keep the tags on things you don't think you will use.  Finally, you can always buy things last minute.  I found myself buying a few outfits last minute b/c he was smaller than DS1 and I didn't have any of the NB sizes I needed.  Thank goodness for gift cards!

  • NY here.  We did regular sleeveless onesies and had some onesie footed/mittened sleepers. Really, she ended up almost always being in a blanket, even a light muslin one, and the sleepers were for night time, if we went somewhere with AC or had ours on, or if we had a chilly/cloudy day.  She had a lot of mama-baby skin-to-skin and you both get really sticky and sweaty fast doing that :)

She liked JUST the kimono shirts because she wanted her arms out a lot.  I would have a few of those in case you have an arms-out swaddler, like we did.  Make sure everything you get has covers for their tiny hands - my little girl wanted to claw her eyes out.. lol

Unless it has a kimono/open front, I wouldn't bother with long sleeves.  They are a big PITA even at this age.  Congratulations :)

  • We did mostly short sleeve onesies and blankets. We weren't outside much for the first month so when we were we just through a blanket over him. Though he was a late may baby. I'd think a few long sleeve onesies and socks might be good. Pants are a pain in the butt unless they snap open! Congrats may babies are the best :

  • I'm in MA and my lo came the very end of April and it was cool for the first month and then I turned the ac on.  I loved the Carter's sets, she lived in them for weeks. The ones with the footed pants, onesie and snap up "jacket" were great because you can add and remove things, the same goes for the sets with the one piece sleep n play, onesie and foot-less pants. Good Luck

  • The first 2-3 months they were always in long sleeved sleepers unless we were going somewhere (and then it was pants with short sleeved onesies.  Whenever we are inside they are still in long sleeves and long pants almost exclusively.  Otherwise they are just cold.  I'm glad we didn't spend a lot of money on shorts and short sleeved onesies.  It would've been a waste of $$.

  • She came at the end of may and we had no need for long sleeves. We live in New Jersey.

  • We are not east coast, but we needed a handful of long sleeve kimono style tops for the first month because Midwest weather is so unpredictable. I also got a bunch of newborn leg warmers from Babylegs which were great for going out and much easier for diaper changes than pants!

  • DD is a hot baby so we didnt do much for layers or long sleeves.  She was in rompers, short sleeved onesies and shorts much of May and the summer.  It was a warm May here though.  And she just turned 4 mos and is still in 0-3 and 3mos clothes.  We had to get some long sleeved ones for fall in 3mos.

  • Babies stay inside most of the time in the first few weeks/months so I went to Carters and bought a couple 5 packs of onesies with the matching pants and socks...  That's all my LO wore the first month or so...  It was comfy for her, easy to change her, and perfect for the AC inside the house.  They also have some sets with a little cotton cardigan or snap up long sleeve top.

  • We're in Pittsburgh. I wish someone had told me that we would need long sleeves all summer long...with the ac, he was only comfy in sleepers. During the day i often put him in short sleeves and pants. But, the only time we did that was when he was going out.

That being said, my baby also prefers to be very warm.

  • Congratulations!  That is so exciting.  I live in MN, so may could mean 40 - 80 degrees.  For the first month, dd wore long sleeves, long pants and a hat, even on warm days.  She fit newborn for maybe three weeks, then moved into 0--3.  She was 7.5 lbs when she was born.  Honestly, I didn't feel comfortable putting her in no sleeves until late July or August.

  • We're in the DC area; May was sooo hot here this year. We had so many cute socks, pants and hats that she never wore even once. She was in short sleeve onesies during the day and the onesie plus Aden+Anais muslin swaddles at night. The only thing we've used blankets for is putting down on the ground during tummy time. Our baby was 2 wks late, so that's also something to consider.... load up on short sleeve onesies and maybe grab a few long sleeve footie sleepers for nighttime.

     Congratulations & good luck!
