4 month wake period is killing me...

DS will be 3 months 3 weeks on sat..He's been eating every hour at night because he hasnt been eating much during the day..He gets up and screams (not crying) at 3am and stays up for an hour. He now stays up for 3-4 hour stretches at a time during the day (he used to be up for an hour to hour and half before falling asleep) when I know he's tired..He fights his sleep. Ugh...I'm exhausted.

Anyone else experiencing this...?

  • I have never heard of this... is this a thing?  But my DD is DEFINITELY fighting naps like a mo-fo!  She is 13 weeks (15 if I adjust for her late arrival)... sigh.  Fingers crossed that she will keep up those long stretches at night.

I hope he has a better night tonight for you!

yeah, apparently it is...I had never heard of it either. I thought it was teething etc...Its called the 4 month wakeful period, where all of a sudden they are more distractible and alert during the day and eat less, while eating more often at night. I just learned about it..If you google it, you will get more info.

    Thanks!

  • Omg can this start early? Like at 3 months? Because this is exactly my son! He is eating less often during the day, fighting naps like crazy, and is up every 1.5 to 2 hours at night to eat. I'm so tired!!!

  • I don't know whats going on with my LO but like I said in an earlier post, his nice 5-6 hour stretch of sleep is long gone at night for the past week. He's up every 1-2 hours at night and he just screams. I started a new part time job 2 weeks ago and this week I am working full time for training, which sucks, but he didn't nap for my sister yesterday and he slept a nice 3 hours for my mother in law today....so we will see how tonight goes. But yes over the weekend he fought sleep and eating during the day as well. I hope this ends soon :(

Yup with DD, who is now two, it started shortly after three months and was over by four.  I am not sure if it just ended or if moving her to her own room did the trick.  Once she was in her own room she slept longer again.  I think our cats were waking her and once she was awake she wanted to play.

  • DD was sleeping through the night- 8-6.  Around 3 and a half months she started waking a few times per night.  Not to eat...just to play, listen to her own voice, and eventually fuss when I ignore her.  If I go in and give her her paci, she will quiet down and eventally fall back asleep.  Sometimes I have to go in a few times though.  This has been going on for a few weeks now.  However some nights she will sleep through the night and not wake at all.  Is this the 4 month wakeful?  Do I just keep going in there to put her pacifier back in her mouth?  Or is this creating a bad habit?

Sorry for everyone who is low on sleep like me!

I hope LO hasn't started hers last night... she was up every 2h. I am a zombie today!

  • I swear I never ever heard of this and don't think I went through this wih my daughter (it's hard to remember now lol!) but as soon as I started seeing people post about it, it happened to us!  My son was doing great sleeping for weeks then he started getting up twice a night again and up for good by 6:30 but last night he was up every two hours!!!  He's downing bottles at night but fighting them during the day!  We even tried putting cereal in his last bottle the last two nights even though I swore I wouldn't.  So frustrating and exhausting!  I'm praying for it to end!

  • One week in and we are still going through the up every 1.5 half to 2 hours at night. I can't imagine this lasting a whole month or more! I'm going to pass out!

  • I responded to a post that you commented on, but DD is doing the same thing for the past week - she only sleeps for about 1 1/2-2 hours at night now, has cut down her naps to 30 minutes, and barely seems to eat. When she does eat (I EBF), she constantly delatches to look around too... The other tough thing has been traveling - unfortunately, we have to take a lot of car trips and now that she doesn't nap properly they've become a LOT more difficult.

I feel like I have a newborn again.
