Need advice re pacifier weaning

I can't get on fb at work, so I'm asking here.  DD had a respiratory virus last week and was admitted to the hospital from Thursday-Sunday.  She's much better now, thankfully, but while in the hospital, she was on oxygen through a nasal cannula.  Before this, she was addicted to her paci only when she went to sleep at night or naps.  However, at the hospital, she couldn't use the paci because of the nasal cannula.  So I had this bright idea I would try to wean her from the paci at home since she didn't have it for 4 days.  Sure enough, when we went to sleep her first couple nights home, she never even looked for it.  Then came last night...she woke at 4am whining then it turned to crying.  Usually when she wakes during the night, she finds a paci in her crib and goes right back to sleep.  Last night, DH and I were up with her from 4am on.  DH and I were arguing about the paci.  He wanted to give it to her and I said no because we had come so far and I didn't want to start over in another 6 months or so.  What would you all do if she wakes again tonight - give paci or no?  I know she is teething molars and other teeth, so the night waking could be pain, but I just don't want to give in to the paci again.  Any advice?  DH and I both work FT so we desperately need our sleep!  TIA!

  • If she is teething it could just be the molars and the paci might not help anyway.  If you have gone this long with no paci I personally wouldn't give it back (unless she turns to thumb sucking).

No sure if you gave her medicine last night or not but this has been our experience with ibprofen and teething.  A NICU Dr helped shed light onto the situation...

We had major issues with night wakings when DD was teething because we were giving her ibuprofen when she went to sleep.  Well she was getting such great uninterrupted sleep for 6-8 hours when it wore off she woke up in pain and well rested unable to go back to sleep.  We have since only given ibprofen if she wakes anytime after 1:30 and no earlier or she is up from the time it wears off until nap time.  If she is in a lot of pain before bed I will do tylenol at bedtime and then wait on the ibprofen until the 1:30 or later mark.

  • I would be hard for me to stick to my guns when I know that would soothe her. But I think you were right sticking with not giving it to her. Y'all have come this far...

Thank you, that's a really good tip.  I did not give medicine at all last night.  I normally give ibuprofen at bedtime if she seems to be in pain, but since she was pumped so full of it in the hospital, I was trying to go without for a few nights.  I will definitely do the tylenol first trick and see if that works.  Thanks!!!

  • I wouldn't give in either. Since you know she is teething it most likely was pain that woke her. I would get rid of the paci not have any in the house, then you can't give in.

Yeah I feel like we've come so far that I don't want to start over in a few months.  I forgot to mention her diaper had leaked so when I noticed she was wet and the sheet was wet, I thought that was the reason.  But then we changed her and the sheet and tried to put her back down, but she cried more.  She was fine when I picked her back up and started rocking her, but wouldn't go back down in the crib.  It makes her mad to be woken up and not be able to go back to sleep, so I thought that was it, too, but she wouldn't even sleep on me, she just wanted to play.

Ooh, that's a really good idea.  Not sure why I didn't think about that!  I'll be throwing them out tonight!

  • We are going through the same thing sleep wise. She is teething and wakes up in the middle of the night with her Paci in. I don't think at this point giving back the paci will solve the issue.

I am glad someone mentioned giving Ibuprofen only when she wakes up. We were up the other night from midning until 3 am because she woke up in pain and just wanted to play.

I have been giving her Tylenol before bed, but it seems to wear off in the middle of the night and she still wakes up.

Sorry you are going through this also.  I know this too shall pass, but when we're up at 4am and have to work the next day, it makes for a long day/week.  I hope it passes quick for both of us!!  I'm going to try tylenol at bed time and then do ibuprofen if she wakes as PP suggested.

  • Totally agree with the Tylenol and ibuprofen but also wanted to mention if she doesn't have a lovey, stuffed animal or blanket in her crib adding one of those could help her soothe herself when she wakes not for teething, but just general wakings. Hope she feels better soon!

Ditto this, Liam uses a binky, but also rubs a lovey on his face when he's trying to settle down, maybe encourage something like that.  It might be tough, but like you said, since you've made it this far, I would really really try to ride it out.

Good luck!  we were just talking about how we need some type of binky-weaning plan...but that's as far as we got, no actual plan yet!
