Sudden Stutter?

Hey, my DS has had a severe speech delay, expressive and receptive, since age 2. He's gotten much better recently. He did a year of preschool last year and it really expanded his vocabulary, and then this summer his articulation improved greatly. But just recently he's been stuttering over some words. I passed it off as articulation problems or trying to get words out faster than his mouth could move.

Just today though he came home and the stutter was really pronounced. It would take sometimes 10 'stutters' to get the word out, and it was for a variety of words/sounds. DH and my mom both agreed that it seemed very sudden.

Does anyone have experience with stutter? Did it come on suddenly? Was it treated efficiently?

I'll speak to his teacher tomorrow and let her know my concerns. There's also an SLP in the class some days, so I'll request to speak to her asap too, but it's suddenness seems worrisome to me.

Re: Sudden Stutter?

  • My son had a speech explosion right around the summer and he has troubles like that with getting words out. Our SLP told me it's normal to coincide with language explosions and gets better with time. Definitely mention it to the SLP but try not to be too concerned yet.

  • DS was speech delayed but was nearly caught up at age 2.5 when suddenly, and out of nowhere, a stutter appeared.  It was right around the same time that he was potty training.

It lasted about a month and now (3 years later) you would never know he had a delay in speech nor stuttered at all.

The advice I was given was to completely ignore it.  Not to tell him to take his time or slow down or anything.  Just let him take as long as he needed to get the sound or word out and carry on like nothing was out of the ordinary.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • ditto to all PPs. we talked to my son's SLP because we were really worried (my son has apraxia), but she said it was totally normal. for DS it comes and goes, one weekend it was so bad, he stopped talking entirely, but he's over it now.
