Paci help

What paci, other than the gum drop, is recommended for ebf babies? Dd has been using me as a paci and I need to put a stop to it for my sanity!!!

Re: Paci help

  • Just use whatever works.  Some babies do well with soothies, some others.  G can take any, but prefer's the Nuk orthostar.  There was a recent study that looked at paci's interference with BFing and found no association between paci use and length of BFing.  Some babies, like mine, have a strong need to suck ;)

Thanks. Dd loves sucking....so a trip to Target to buy every kind of paci is in store for us!

  • We use NUK orthodontic. I think it is whatever works, like pp said though
  • I think I tried every single pacifier out there with #2. He had a strong need to suck and wanted to use me as is pacifier, which wasn't working out so well for me. As it turns out, he HATED the silicone pacifiers. Once we finally went to the latex rubber ones (the brown ones), he was sold. If you can find some of those, you might want to grab one.

  • At first I was 100% against using a paci.  My peditrician said as long as BFing was established and baby was gaining weight it was "safe" to introduce one.

I caved at 2 weeks and gave DD a paci.  I felt like all she wanted to do was suck suck suck.  I htink she has a high need to suck.  But I really don't have anything to compair it to.

I initally used the NUK orthodonic one.  Since we got one free from the hospitlal.  It has been a life saver!!!  The only thing I don't lilke is that is has a handle (like a D-ring) and it makes it easy for DD to knock it out of her mouth with her hand as she is falling asleep.

So I tried the Avent onces where you can see the inside of thier mouth move (like the gumdrops).  I thought she would be less likely to knock it out of her mouth.  She went to take it but gave me a funny face.  She eventually took it, but prefered the NUK.

I just bought a package of NUKs.  I was hoping they'd have the ones without the handle (little bulb on the end instead), but the store only had the ones with the handles.  Oh well.

    GL!

At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid.  Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth.  If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP.  My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!

To clarify . . . the avent ones that I tried were the avent soothies.

  • Another vote for "whichever one your baby will take."  Mine would only take the Mams.  No Nuks, Soothies, or Avents here - all got spit out.

  • Another vote for whatever works.  Mine would only take the Mams (tried Soothies and Gumdrops before that).  Though now, he'll usually take whatever, which has come in handy a couple of times when the Soothie or Gumdrop was much closer/easier to find than his preferred Mam paci.  And even still, he usually prefers sucking on his fingers/hands rather than his paci, but it took awhile for him to get to the stage where he could "find" his hands to put in his mouth.
