Natural Birth

Perineal massage

Hi Ladies! I'm curious if any of you who went natural had this done during your delivery and if it worked. Also, was it painful? My OB's assistant just informed me they do this only when you get an epi because otherwise its not tolerable...I'm still going to ask my OB to do this but I was curious as to the validity of her comment. Thanks!

Re: Perineal massage

  • Nope, no one touched me. I had talked with my midwife about warm compresses on the perineum, but I ended up delivering in the water so a warm cloth was not necessary. I didn't tear.

  • I didn't have it done with any of my 3 pregnancies/deliveries. I tore a tiny bit with #1 and none at all with #2 or 3 (1 and 3 were waterbirths). I've read on here from women who've tried it before labor that it can be painful.

  • OB did it w/ DS1 who came out OT with a nuchal hand. He was in possible distress, so I did hard, coached pushing. 3rd degree tear. It was painful (and I had some pain meds w/ that delivery), but I don't know that the pain was that strong compared to everything else that was happening.

MW did warm compress with DS2. I also think she used some herbs/arnica. DS2 also had a nuchal hand but was OA. I had several internal and external 1st degree tears. I was planning for a water birth, but had to get out during pushing for severe decels in baby's heart. So, even though I didn't get the full benefit of the water, the time in the tub probably helped things be supple.

  • I had perineal massage and ended up with a 2nd degree tear.  Next time I will probably decline the massage and opt for warm compresses, because I'm not convinced it helped all that much.

The massage was uncomfortable, but in the grand scheme of birthing a baby I don't think I noticed it much.

  • My OB did this during my delivery.  My LO had a nuchal hand (hands on her face) so my OB told me he was massaging and stretching me to try to prevent a bad tear.  Honestly, I don't remember it hurting or feeling uncomfortable because I was focused on other things, like pushing during contractions. All I was focused on was pushing my LO out, so if my OB did not tell me he was doing this I probably would not have even noticed!
  • I can't speak from personal experience, but my mom had a perineal massage with my little brother (without an epi) and she did not tear at all.  I don't know if she was in the minority or not.

  • Well during pushing my midwife held a warm cloth against my pernium, but as for massage, she gave me insturctions and told me to do it one or two times a day (I forget), starting at 36 weeks maybe ? (I forget again).

I did it maybe once or twice then said to hell with it and didn't bother anymore, its pretty uncomfortable and kind of awkward and boring, lol.  I didnt tear but got a small episiotomy b/c the vaccuum was used
