3rd Trimester

STM's have you had your membranes scraped before?

I went to my Dr today and she mentioned doing just that at my visit today. But I felt uneasy about it and wanted to talk it over with H before doing so.  So my question is have you done it and what was your experience after doing it? Did you regret doing so?  I'm due in 12 days, 2 cm dilated, and 60% effaced so I'm making progress and for that I'm very happy!!  I was thinking that if I'm still the same in a week I'll do it, but we'll see.

Thanks ladies and please no judgement. Only happy thoughts are allowed here! LOL

  • No, I've never had it but I've been a scheduled c-section every time.

I don't have any advice for you but best wishes!

  • No judgment!  I've had it done with all three and I think it only helped my 2nd to come a little quicker - it's not terribly uncomfortable, more like a rough pap smear, and be prepared for some spotting and cramping afterward.  If the cramping keeps up it just may have done the trick!

  • I had mine stripped with DD on May 20th and had her 4 days later.

When she checked me she seemed especially rough, I bleed through my panties afterwards and have been cramping ever since.  Before she did it she was laughing and said "Well I won't do it unless you say so but I can do an aggressive check on you".  I think that's what she did, unless that's how checks are supposed to go.

It sounds like you may have had the equivalent...how are you feeling?  :)

  • Feeling good just really crampy on and off and have had contractions but nothing consistent. Mostly downward pressure in my pelvis...more so than usual.  :)

  • I had it done with DD and it was painful and didn't do anything. I bled for 3 days (you're only supposed to spot a little), but I also found out later I had a uterine infection that might have been why I bled so much. I went into labor a week later (39w 4d)

I just had it done yesterday with this pregnancy and I didn't feel a thing and only spotted for a few hours! I had cramping all through the night. I hear if it's going to start labor, it will happen within 24-48 hours. My doc told me that in her experience, it doesn't help much, but that if your body is ready, it can get things going.

Both times, I was 2.5-3 cm dilated.

  • I didn't have it done last time and don't plan on doing it this time.  I figure the baby will come when he's good and ready.  But if you want to do it, go for it.

  • I had mine done with DS1 but was also induced 10 hours later but the induction was listed as assisted because I was contracting so who knows?  I will probably get it done again if they ask.  It can't hurt.
  • I had it done with DS1 but I don't think I was ready anyway (well I obviously wasn't b/c I was induced and ended up with a c/s). It just made me a little crampy for a couple days. This time I'm having a RCS so I'm not going that route, but I would do it again if my body were more ready than it was with DS1. I was barely dilated 1cm and I don't even remember how effaced. I was kind of like you described a really rough "check", but my OB admitted that he couldn't "get in there" very well Indifferent.

A girl at work I knew had it done and I think delivered within 24hrs, but if I remember correctly she was overdue by a couple days or maybe it was her due date...? All I remember was that she had it done and it worked.

  • I had it done with my first at my 41 week appointment.  It was painful and it didn't work for me.  He was born at 42 weeks.  It will only work if baby is ready.

  • You might want to try a nice walk and bounce around on an exercise ball if you have one available... ;)

  • I didn't have it with DD and I probably won't this time either unless I go past my due date and I'm favorable enough for the procedure (i.e. you can't do it on a closed cervix).  So we'll just have to see how it goes.  I'm not opposed if I'm past due, but I wouldn't do it before my due date.

  • I did it at 38 weeks 6 days and my water broke that night. To me it was never uncomfortable, no cramping/spotting, etc. There's really no reason not to. It doesn't work for everyone. If your body's not ready nothing will probably happen.

  • I'm a labor and delivery nurse. Most of the  time it doesn't work unless you are really ready to go into labor. With my last pregnancy, my OB did it at 39, 40, and 41 weeks. The 41 week stripping of my membranes did put me into labor. Her aggressive exam sounds like she basically did it. You will feel crampy, and may or may not cause labor.
  • I had it done with my first and it didn't help at all and I still needed an induction.

  • I had it done with my second at 39w3d.  Babe was born 3 days later after a short (2.5 hour-ish) labour.

So, it didn't help move things along.  It also is pretty uncomfortable.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Didn't work. My doc said it only works if your body is ready which mine was not. Oh and it hurt like he11!
