Thoughts on Greta Kate?

Good afternoon ladies! Just wondering if I can get some feedback on my latest idea, Greta Kate. Let me explain how this idea came about.

My biological mom's whom I was close to, but who passed away when I was young mn was Kathleen. My motherinlaw's name is Katherine. Hence, Kate for a mn.

My name is Margaret, and my stepmom who raised me and who I consider my mom equally is Gretchen. Hence, Greta.

So....Greta Kate. It would honor all four moms in my future daughter's life, which I love. I'm not sure if I'm sold on Greta. Do you consider it "plain"? Does Greta Kate sound pretty? I'm not only about honoring family membersname aesthetics matter to me, too.

I also should throw it out there that our last name is very short and German, so I think it goes well with Greta. Thoughts?

ETA: Sorry for errors. Mobile bump.

Re: Thoughts on Greta Kate?

  • I LOVE the name Greta. I'm not as fond of Kate, but is has significance to you which is the most important thing. The flow is nice.

  • I really like it! I don't think it's too choppy, unless your last name is also short. In that case consider adding another middle name along with Greta Kate.

  • I was going to suggest Gretchen Kathleen or Margaret Katherine with Greta Kate as a nn, but after I read the reasoning I could see making Greta Kate the proper name.
  • Love it! Some people think Greta is too "harsh" sounding but when I was naming my daughter, I wasn't looking for anything popular or cutesy. Greta Kate sounds good together! My daughter is Greta Vivian.

  • I like both names. I don't love them together, but I think it's such a great way to honor everyone so I would go for it.

  • I really like it. Normally when people try to honour so many family members the name ends up long and full of smush names and wonky spellings, but Greta Kate works really well for honouring your family.

  • I don't love Greta and Kate together. I actually like Greta Kathleen better. I understand that you wouldn't then be honoring your mother-in-law though.

  • I was also going to suggest going with Katherine instead of just Kate, but I do like how Kate ties into your mom and MIL. Greta Kate sounds pretty to me, and I wouldn't consider it plain.

Love that it honors so many people, but I feel it's kind of choppy.  I think Greta Katherine sounds a lot better but it doesn't tie in Kathleen.

  • I'm really not a fan of Greta honestly. But I get the significance and I think that tacking on Kate makes the whole name sound cute. I'd actually prefer it as a double name...like if she was called Greta Kate just like Mary Kate.
  • I love it, especially with all the family significance!
  • I really like it, and love the connections.
  • I absolutely love Greta so Greta Kate gets a thumbs up from me.

  • Love it.  Perfect with family significance, great without it.  Kate is one of the few nick names that I think works as a stand alone and it's great that it can work for Katherine and Kathleen.   I've always been a fan of Eloise for you, but I like this one even better.

Haha - we still LOVE Eloise. It's probably our frontrunner. The only issue I have with Eloise is that I'm not sure if it works with our last name (very hard and German, like Klum or Krug). While visiting my parents last weekend, my dad said that a name with a hard consonant (like Clara or Greta) would work better than Eloise. Now I'm torn!

I really like it as a double first name like Mary Kate. It's so pretty together it would seem like a shame not to say her middle name all the time.

  • I like Greta a lot, but I took it off of my own list because I know the 'T' wouldn't really be pronounced in most American accents.  Not that I think it should be pronounced necessarily, but having it written there and not said for some reason bothers me in a name (unlike a word like "water", where I'm okay with most American accents not pronouncing the 'T').

Does that make sense?  I do like the name, though!
