All input will be appreciated. TIA
1. How often should the peabody evaluation be given out?
2. Is it possible to be double dipping in services if you receive state insurance and your child attends a special needs school?
3. Is it wrong?
I have heard otherwise from the school O.T. and I want your thoughts. I called my insurance as well.
Re: Three ?'s
I think P had the peabody twice from age 2-7 months when she was in private therapy. But I'm not really sure on the standard guidelines for the eval..
This is going to be state specific. Some states don't bill insurance at all, our old state did not and all services were free. So we could technically have used EI and our insurance for private services as well. But here, in VA they have a sliding scale fee and are required to bill insurance (maybe not "required" but they do..). I know when P was getting ST thorough EI and a spot opened up at the therapy center they told us we couldn't do both, that the insurance wouldn't cover it. And that was our private insurance, not her medicaid.
I don't think it's "wrong," I personally feel like EI vs outpatient therapy is very different, a hospital based approach vs a teach the parent type approach. Every child is so different therefore different approaches could make a huge impact on how the child responds to therapy.
I would just find out what you are really "allowed" to do, maybe get an eval through a private place and go from there.
Another example, a friend of mine in GA has a little girl with spina bifida who is fairly delayed she has had 3 shunt revisions in addition to the original surgery and her spinal surgery after birth. She is 6 months and just getting around to starting the therapy thing, the EI therapist told her more than once a week would be pointless, and take a way from the children who really need it.
I was confused, is she saying that the baby is going to be delayed no matter how much therapy she gets and that kids who have a better chance of improving quicker deserve the 2x a week? Often times I feel like EI make say thing based on their schedules not necessarily based on whats best for the child, this is where private therapists can be helpful.
Anyways! That was a lot lol, I guess I would 1. find out if you legally & legitimately can have EI & outpatient services and 2. decide if you think your child just needs MORE therapy or a different approach to said therapy.
GOOD LUCK!!
1. DS has had 2 Peabody evaluations with his private occupational therapy within the course of 4 months.
I wanted to add O.T. for DS at his special needs school. The school O.T. said the Peabody is suppose to be done once a year.
2. She also said I was not allowed to have speech for DS at the special need school AND private speech.
I called my state insurance and they said I can have it for DS if I had a referral from a pediatrician.
3. I didn't think it is was wrong. I thought it was good for DS.
I have to really think about this. She made me feel bad. In all honesty I did not know and just want what is best for DS.
The Peabody should be only given once a year, though it won't hurt to have an extra time one year if a child needs to reevaluated to qualify for services. In my state for ei therapists are required to administer the test twice a year to continue with services. From the si have noticed that some children will go into preschool services able to complete all tasks for the tests but not be able to utilize these skills elsewhere if you have a good therapist they will notice the difference between having the skills and knowing how to complete the tests.
As for the other questions it depends on the state if you can use both.
