Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Socializing: Older Kids vs. Younger Kids

My daughter will be 14-months old in January, and in February she qualifies as a toddler in the eyes of her day care, so she should be transitioning into the toddler class at 15 months, however, they do not have any room in the toddler class until June, which means my daughter will be socializing solely with infants for four or five months before she can get into the toddler class. While there are three other kids her age who will also be staying in the infant class as a result of this space issue, I'm concerned that playing with "babies" while she is a bit older will delay her development. It seems that the toddler class does so many more age-appropriate activities (singing, building, etc) that she would be missing out on. I can't find any input on this from the internet, as it's quite a strange topic to Google search, but I'd love anyone's input who has been in a similar situation or has an opinion on the matter! I don't want to have to find another day care because I really love the toddler program at this one, but if I have to, I will. Thanks!

  • I dont think it will delay her development, as long as you're still providing her with developmental activities at home too. However, I'd be disappointed too and either looking for a different daycare or finding out what this infant class was going to provide her for age specific activities. You are paying them to appropriately care for your child.

I totally agree with the above.  I would make sure that the teacher was making sure to have developmentally appropriate activites/things to do with them.  If they weren't providing developmentally appropriate care then I would look else where.

  • This happened to us, too. The kids are supposed to transition when they are walking steadily full time, which DS was doing at 11 months, but due to space limitations, he didn't move till 15-16 months. I think his infant teachers were still "working" with him on things (as were we) and he was definitely not developmentally delayed at all.
  • Actually, I'd be concerned that my INFANT was in with 15 month olds.... it's a safety issue, IMO, not just a developmental thing...
