1st Trimester

Worried about hormone levels

So I had my first BFP a week ago today, which would have been CD 32 and about a day before when my period would probably start.  Kept getting BFPs throughout the week.  On Friday I went to my doctor b/c I had called her - I was getting cramping and spotting all week.  So she did a pelvic and took blood.  Got the blood results today - HCG is 176 and progesterone is 9.  She said that is low and she thinks I may have miscarried but wants to do another test tomorrow afternoon, so I'll go in again.  She said they may also be low just because I would have been so newly pregnant.  Until I get tomorrow's blood test results back (probably Thursday or Friday), can anyone provide me some insight into if this happened to you and how everything worked out?  I'm a nervous wreck!  I should add that I am a freak and have been POAS every single morning since I went to her (including this morning) and ALL have been positive - VERY positive - dark lines on FRER and Wondfo and one CB digital "pregnant".  Any words of wisdom, etc. are much appreciated, thank you!

Re: Worried about hormone levels

  • I'm always amazed at how stupid some doctors are.  She has NOTHING to base a miscarriage diagnosis on and frankly, I think it was negligent of her to tell you that was her suspicion.  Levels vary widely and the only way to know how the levels are really doing is to draw more than one - they'll go up or down and you have your answer.  One draw tells you nothing more than that you ARE pregnant.  GL!

  • My first beta was 176 and the last a week ago was 3700+ so I wouldn't worry! Get them pulled again. It all matters if they're going up!

As for the low progesterone, I'm in the same boat. I don't know what my number was last week, but it was low enough for them to put me on a supplement.

    FX for you :)

  • Thank you all for your responses, they did make me feel a little better. I'll ask about progesterone supplements tomorrow. I was a little thrown off when she mentioned that I may have miscarried seemed a little premature to me too but I assumed she knew best she's really a wonderful doctor well, til now I guess... I still "feel" pregnant sore boobs, acid reflux, etc. and as I said, still getting positives on my HPT though I realize that just has to do with hcg, not progesterone. The cramping and spotting has been gone since saturday, too not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing when i was in on friday she said it could be implantation given the timing. But it's nice to hear that others had low levels and went on to have healthy pregnancies and babies. This process of testing and retesting and waiting is torture!
  • Oh and I should add that I can't say with certainty how many DPO I was, my best guess is about 12 DPO on Tuesday when I got my first BFP, so 15 DPO at the blood test.  And I apologize for the run-ons in my previous post - I sent it from my phone and forgot you can't use parenthesis on the mobile site!

My PCP is still saying that i miscarried three weeks ago (Aug 30).  My levels were 276 the day we thought i miscarried (blood, bad cramping along with a few other signs).  Last Thursday my levels are 2200+ and her exact words to me were; I have no explanation as to why your levels are still rising.  Don't stress too much.  I have done the POAS thing at least once a week since 8/30 and all of them have been positive and dark lines.  It is a good chance you are just super early in your pregnancy.

Wow your doctor is still telling you that you miscarried but your levels are rising?? Is your progesterone normal too?
  • I have no idea to be honest.  I had to ask what my hormone numbers were after the third time i had my blood drawn, and they had to find them and call me back.

I am due to go in for my third set of ultra sounds on Thursday to see if we can see anything and then they have referred me to an OB, who i see in a week.

That is crazy! I am so sorry. Good luck, I hope everything works out for you! This is a really scary, nerve wracking process, isn't it?! Unbelievable.

Have you done an ultrasound? If your HCG was 276 on August 30th, ideally they should have been a lot more than 2200 on September 13th.

  • Ultrasound same day as 276.  Went in 8/6 for the next one (levels were about 1153), still nothing showed.  Did both a pelvic and internal both times.  Another blood draw last week and it was 2266.  Third set of ultra sounds is scheduled for Thursday morning.  We are hoping to finally see something or at least get a definite answer as to if we are going to have a baby or not; we have basically been in limbo for about 3 weeks.

  • Yea basically I have dealt with/gone through the miscarriage thing twice, and been in limbo if i am pregnant or not for about 3 weeks.

  • Oh my goodness. The not knowing is the hardest part sometimes. I'm so sorry, thoughts and prayers are with you. Hope we both get great news this week! This is so hard sometimes.
  • Turns out I was only about 3 and 1/2 weeks when I got my BFP.  My HCG the following day was 20.  My first doctors appointment was about a week and a half later, and I was at 3,000 and something.  I had an ultrasound 2 weeks later and measured 6w 3d, so far, so good.  My symptoms have been milder than some people's and I wonder if its because my hormone levels just aren't as high.  My MS has been getting worse and I wonder if the HCG is finally getting high enough to really affect me.  Just speculating.  From what I've seen people say around here, spotting can be totally normal during the first trimester and like others have said, I don't see how she can think miscarriage based on only one HCG.  Also, my 20 HCG was when my period was already a week late!  So I must've ovulated later.. so if you don't know when you ovulated, gosh that number could be anywhere.  Try not to worry and congrats!! :)

Thank you! After doing more online research, I feel like the bigger issue is the fact that my progrsterone is only 9. I guess the most important thing with the hcg is how quickly it's doubling, so I get that the initial number is less relevant. But if my progesterone is so low, even just waiting until my appointment tomorrow could be detrimental to the pregnancy, right? I read somewhere tha pregnancy cannot be sustained with a progesterone level less than 10. So now that is freaking me out a bit. I will definitely be asking about the supplements tomorrow. I wish I had thought to ask on the phone today but given how early I am in the pregnancy and that I only had one BT so far, I doubt she would have put me on them today anyway. Anyway, I'm just nervous and rambling, thanks for all of your wise and kind words, I do appreciate them!

Good luck to you! I hope all goes well, you're right that the stress and anticipation are enough to drive you insane. I thought just getting the bfp was 75 percent of the battle but I was so wrong! I had blood drawn today, should get results tomorrow afternoon. I was so nervous this afternoon when I got home that I poas and my test line was way darker than my control line on the frer. So I am hoping that means my levels are high but you never know with this stuff. Sigh........
  • It's different for everyone. That's what I keep hearing. I just need to know that my levels are going up.... I will be at ease once I know that. I can deal with some cramping as long as I know my baby is ok.
