antibiotics and diarrhea?

DS2 is on amoxicillan for a nast upper respiratory infection.  It is tearing up his gut.  I've got him on a dose of probiotics (more than 4 hours from his amox dose).  anything else i can do? he had pedialyte for the last 12 hours because he wouldn't take formula so now i'm mixing half formula half pedialyte to keep him hydrated.  poor thing had a nasty stomach bug 2 weeks ago so he's still recovering from a week of diarrhea.

i asked the pharmacist and he told me yogurt and bananas. i said well he's only 3 months old and he told me that it was okay it wouldn't hurt.  i don't intend to start my 3month old on solids so i was wondering if you ladies had any suggestions.

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

Re: antibiotics and diarrhea?

  • Pretty much just probiotics and a ton of triple paste to help combat the coming diaper rash. I wouldn't do yogurt or bananas either. If it gets really bad, *maybe* rice cereal mixed into his bottle? That's about the only other thing I can think of.

  • If he takes regular formula, try switching to a soy based formula.  When Chris was younger he got a tummy bug (which we later found out was tainted Similac) but they had us switch to soy formula for a few days and there was this powder that we used to mix into it- I think they were probiotics.  (ProFlora I think the name was) and it helped immensely.

Other than that, definitely get the extra strength diaper rash cream and change him as soon as he goes.

If you're open to it, I think the rice suggestion might also be a good idea.

  • We do probiotics.  Ask your ped how much your child can have.  I was surprised at the amount that was allowed.  For us, the more the better.  Calmoseptine is a WONDER cream.  You can find it in the adult incontinence section.  It is for diaper rash among other things.  Best we found!
  • Also, I don't know if you have a Nosefrida, but it is a wonderful mucous suctioner. I find that mucous drainage can add to the loose stool issue in my little guy.

Hope things turn around quickly for your sweetie!
