Co-sleeping and a newborn

Looking for some advice. My DD seems to only sleep in my arms. She has been sleeping with us the past 3 nights. I'm not worried at all about rolling onto her nor am I worried about my husband rolling on her. I am worried, however, about her getting stuck near a pillow or something...or her face too smooshed into the mattress. A co-sleeping bed won't work because she loves to nestle up right next to me. Can anyone offer any tips? I hope I don't get flamed for this. I realized sleeping in a crib on her back is the "safest" sleep environment for her. Just wish that option worked.

Re: Co-sleeping and a newborn

  • We went through the same thing. (My daughter is now 2 months old.) Anyway, we do two different things. Sometimes my daughter falls asleep and we move her into the Rock and Play sleeper next to my side of the bed. I actually prefer this because I sleep better. Sometimes, though, my daughter needs to sleep next to me. If this is the case, I make sure that she is on my side of the bed and not between my husband and me. (Because I also worry about my husband rolling on top of her or throwing a pillow on her or something.) When she sleeps on my side, I make sure that there are no comforters up near her, and I kind of move the end of my pillow so any "extra" pillow is towards my husband and not the baby.

  • My guy is almost 4 months and since day 3 has slept in the bed with us.  I am set up so that he can nurse when he wants. Basically I lay on my side with my arm straight out between my pillow and his head. He has always slept on his side from day 1 so he sleeps facing me. He sleeps so close to me that anytime he moved in the beginning it woke me up. So I wasn't worried about him smooshing his face in the mattress.  He eventually decided that the best place for his head was on top of my breast. He uses it as a pillow lol.

  • I slept without a pillow so I slept lower which to me was ok I was comfortable, we also when he was really small had him sleep on a pillow between us if that makes sense it worked for us granted there were possible issues but it's what worked. Now when he comes in he is usually on my arm or I position. Him lower than the pillows kind of armpit height, he also sleeps on top of the blankets he hates them

  • Ok thanks everyone. She starts out in her Rock N Play but lasts only a couple of hours. I will make sure to pull the pillows away from her. She usually sleeps on my arm (my arm is straight out) and its totally uncomfortable!!

  • We never let DD sleep between in as we felt it just added surrounding hazards unnecessarily. She would either sleep on my side so I could nurse in the lying down position or on DH's side if I needed a break after nursing. Whoever had her would make her area on the bed completely void of blankets and pillow. I always slept on just the corner of the pillow and pushed the rest towards the center and only used covers to my waist so there wouldn't be any near her face.

This is my siggy. Love it.

You are right--it is safest.   Your DD is only 2 weeks old.  You said that she sleeps for 2 hours before waking.  That's not unusual and may have nothing to do with where she sleeps.  Many newborns wake up every couple of hours to eat.  Mine did, and would have regardless of where he slept.

  • At that age DD and I slept downstairs on the futon in her room.  I would have a small pillow and a light blanket and she would be about a foot and a half from me.  If we snuggled I would push the blanket down.  I did not feel comfortable having her between us at that age.

  • Did any of you worry your baby was too close to the edge? After being smothered by pillows or getting rolled on, baby falling off the bed is my biggest concern.
