worried about nursing and ttc

I met with the ob and told her that I am still bf-ing and trying to conceive soon.  She said that the practice all say to stop once pregnant due to risk of preterm labor, but I thought that was  a myth.  I told her I definitely will continue to nurse as long as my son wants to.

I am worried that he will want to stop due to change in taste of milk, he is 27 months.  I still nurse to sleep for naps and bed, and whenever he needs extra comfort, and a few other times a day.  I can't imagine him sleeping without nursing to sleep and I worry about the big change.  He has fallen asleep while reading with Daddy before though.

Re: worried about nursing and ttc

  • You have to do what feels right to you. If you didn't have any issues with preterm labor before then I see no need for you to stop. DD was 14mos when I got pregnant. She was still nursing around the clock. She does seem to be weaning herself this past month but I'm only making colostrum now and have been for awhile.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • He may wean when you get pregnant and the taste of your milk changes. Or you could hold off from ttc and he could wean in 3 months from now because he's ready to wean. I would not be concerned about it and let your son call the shots.

  • The "risk" of preterm labour from nursing isn't supported by any actual study I've seen. If they push it, I would push back and ask for a source.

At 27 months, I think your son will surprise you with how adaptable he is. We're TTC now, and my son is only 16 months. He always falls asleep after nursing but not during nursing. I plan to just take things one step at a time - I don't know how long it will take to get pregnant. Then I don't know how my body will react to continuing nursing, and I don't know how he will react to changing milk. What I do know is that all children wean eventually, and moms find other ways to show them how loved they are.

  • I'm still nursing my almost 13 month old pretty much on demand (before naps/bed, overnight, and sometimes throughout the day a couple times), and am 28 weeks pregnant.  I had an NP tell me it was critical I stop BFing when I got pregnant, but then the OB she works with, and the two MW's I've seen since have all said it's great I'm still nursing and to keep it up as long as I (and my son) want to.  There is no reason you should be worried about preterm labor if you had no problems with it in your last pregnancy.  I'd find a new doctor, honestly.

  • Check out the book Adventures in Tandem Nursing. It covers the medical side as well as what your older nursling may do. Quick note on the medical: there is no proof that BF while PG is harmful unless an acute problem arises or you are severely malnourished.

Yes, your baby may wean.Or not. DS1 self-weaned when I was 37w PG. I was sad b/c I love that aspect of our relationship and the health benefits, but it was his choice and it was a gentle, gradual, child-driven transition. (Yes my body played a part based on drying up/changing to colostrum, but I think that DS has full emotional ownership and did not "get" my part.)

  • Find a new OB!

I got pregnant with DS2 when DS1 was about 24 months, I weaned him over 5-6 months. It actually went pretty smoothly, and DS1 did get used to not nursing to sleep (I did don't offer, don't refuse). hth

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I got pregnant with no problems while breast feeding my then 23 month old son.  We have continued to nurse around 2-4 times a day throughout my pregnancy and have had no complications.  If you have a history of preterm labor, it can be a good idea to stop, but if you have otherwise healthy pregnancies, I wouldn't worry about nursing through pregnancy.

  • I'm still nursing my 2 yo and am pg with baby #3. I didn't ask my OB, and I didn't mention it to her at my 1st appointment. I have no risks for preterm labor, so I am comfortable continuing to nurse.

  • My ob is fine with me continuing to nurse DD2. In fact I just switched Ob since the old one told me I caused my miscarriage by doing so. I did research it and there is no proof of miscarriage being linked to breastfeeding while pregnant.

  • Callum was still nursing a ton at 18 months when I got pregnant - he wasn't nursing to sleep much though at that point, mostly because he'd always been about 50/50 nursing to sleep and being worn to sleep.

He did wean right before his 2 b'day when I was about halfway through pregnancy - he cut way back on his own the months prior and I did "don't offer, don't refuse."  His loss of interest was pretty quick; I was convinced in the beginning I'd be tandem nursing.

So I wouldn't worry too much about it - just take it as it comes ;-)
