Birthday Party Timing

I'm getting ready to order invites for DS's 2nd birthday party. I want to have it in the afternoon/early evening and serve dinner. There will be guests with small children that will travel over an hour to get to our house for the party.

I am leaning toward 4PM. Should I push it back an hour? Would you expect dinner at a 4PM party? Is 5 too late for our guests who are travelling? Opinions?

Re: Birthday Party Timing

  • Just because you want it to start at 4 doesn't mean you have to eat at 4pm.  You could state on the invite 4-7pm with dinner at 5pm, etc.

  • I agree with PP, have party start at 4 and have dinner served around 5.  We usually have some apps out for snacking for the first little bit while I finish putting together the main meal

I would stick with 4pm.  DS would need to leave around 7-8 for bedtime so that gives you 3-4 hours.  If you had it at 5pm it would only be 2 hours before he might have to leave.  I would expect dinner, and would serve it around 5-5:30pm because the little ones get hungry earlier.

This is exactly what I was thinking. You could also have a few healthy snacks for before dinner to munch on. Fruit salad, raw veggies, cheese and crackers, etc. My kids have a tough time sitting down to eat in party situations because they are over stimulated, so easy picking foods are best (at least for us!)

  • We like a 4PM start time for parties.  I usually have snacks and appetizers out right at four, then serve the "dinner" food between 5 and 5:30.  Cake around 6:00 so people who need to leave earlier can get on the road.
