Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Intimacy after m/c

This is kind of a strange question... how long did people's doctors say to wait for intimacy after a natural miscarriage? (Protected, of course)

Re: Intimacy after m/c

  • Well my Dr. has been very vague about it.  She said wait to have intercourse until after your first normal period.  So then I asked her why.  And she said that the only reason for this is because if I get pregnant she will have no way of dating me because I haven't had a period since the beginning of June.

So I'm not sure if there is or should be a ban on protected intercourse . . .

Honestly though, a MC is such a tough thing to go through as husband and wife and my philosophy for myself has been that if I feel like it, I'm going to do it because it strengthens the bond, you know?  But that being said, I've only had sex 2 times since finding out over a month ago that my LO had no HB.

  • My gyno said we didn't have to wait on anything and that everything looked fine. This was also my first mc, so I personally made the decision to use protection, and wait until after my next cycle to try again. We weren't trying the first time, but I feel like my body needed a hormonal break and AF should be here in about a week. So I just didn't want to mess my body up even more.

  • Not an odd question I was wondering too! My dr said once I stop bleeding completely spotting too protected is fine. We are going to wait a month or two before trying again.
I feel like everyone gets a different answer though.
  • I got multiple answers from multiple people at the same office. So I think that everyone really does get a different answer.
  • It depends how far along you are and if you had a d&c. At first my Dr told me 4wks but then i brough it up to him a week later and he said as long as i am ok at my 2wk check up that its ok....the main issue is infection/pregnancy...I personally think that its up to you when you feel up to it..

  • My doctor told me one week after I stopped bleeding. I was 5w3d when the mc started and at 6w2d when I went back to the doctor, my body had naturally done everything it was supposed to. The ER told me 3 weeks, though, so I think it just depends on the doctor.

  • Not a strange question at all! I was wondering the same thing, and my dr. said 1) as soon as the bleeding stopped and 2) once we feel emotionally ready.

For me, I am looking forward to being intimate with my husband again, since we have already been on pelvic rest for a few weeks due to the initial spotting, and I do feel it brings us closer & will help to start the healing process.

I am sorry for your loss & sending good thoughts that each of us will soon be blessed with a healthy baby. xo

  • My doctor didn't say we need to wait at all.  He said we could start trying to get pregnant again right away (no need for unprotected), and I plan to do just that.  The best way for me to heal emotionally is to get KU again.

  • Just saw my doc yesterday, and she said it's fine as soon as the bleeding has fully stopped.

It's sort of the last thing on my mind right now, given that I'm still cramping, bleeding, etc., but DH is feeling a bit...er...deprived. Poor guy. : )

  • After my MC the ER doc said to wait at least a week after I stopped bleeding. I don't honestly remember how long we waited, but I do know the first couple of times I cried after, not from pain but because of my emotions - I don't know how to really describe how I was feeling.

After my d&c I was told to wait until I got clearance at my 2wk f/u appt - mostly for infection... at 2wks post it's a check to see if your cervix has closed, if the cervix hasn't closed there's an increased risk of infection & that's why they really recommend having protected sex if it's not closed.
