Menelik...honest opinions?

Opinions on the name Menelik for a boy (pronounced Men-uh-leek)

DH and I live in Nebraska and there was a husker football player named Menelik. I liked the name but thought it was one of those names that people would give me the side eye for. I looked it up and it is a legitimate African name. Last night DH decided he really liked it and wants to use it for this baby if its a boy (team green) our other option is Micah.

We figured if we use the name Menelik we need a very simple middle name and all we could come up with was Kai..other suggestions welcome!

Honest opinions?  Is it too out there? Thanks in advance. We are not telling people our name choices and I knew I would get honest opinions from you ladies.

  • I'm not digging it, it's a little too out there for me but it's up to you.

  • First - I think it will be pronounced Men-uh-lick all of the time.  Which leads to... second - reminds me of PeeWee Herman's "mecca-lecca-hi" bit...

I vote no.  But the great beauty of it all is that I don't REALLY get a vote... You decide what name is right for your family!  ;)

  • I am usually not one for unusual names, but that one is kinda cool.

  • It sounds a bit clunky to me.

    ETA: I like Micah.

  • I'm not familiar with this name at all, what does it mean?  Overall, I don't hate it. (I'm a sucker for a good baseball name so I shouldn't discriminate against football names. Wink)

It is however very different in style from your other children's names. I think that would be my biggest reservation.

I would avoid a MN that starts with the same letter that ends the first name, otherwise they run together.

  • I would pronounce it Menelick instead of the other way. Meneleik would IMO give the right pronounciation. I think its a little out there and hard sounding. Micah is a beautiful name! What about Micah Menelik . It sounds good as a middle name to me
  • I just don't like it, it's just not my style but it's your baby. I tend to be very simple in my name choices.
  • Honestly, I wouldn't do that to a kid. What about using it for a middle name?

  • It may be pronounced "leek", but it looks like Men-e-lick.  Come junior high...  no.  He will get too many comments about licking men.  If a grown woman can see that right away, you can be sure that pre-teen boys will.  Or "Men-I-Like."  (A friend's son has gotten physically bullied/sexually harassed recently because he's well-mannered and bookish.  Imagine if he'd ALSO had a name with built-in gay jokes.)

It means son of the wise man or what will he send....I also thought it was very different from our other two children's name but DH doesn't feel like thats a big deal. I like the name just not sure if I can own it!

  • This could lead to a lot of teasing in middle school. Kids are mean!
  • I'd give you more of a side-eye for naming your child after some random person, athlete or otherwise.  And I have a bias against Huskers anyway (sorry!), so that makes me judgy about why you picked such an odd name.  Just seems odd all around.

Seems like a better way to come up with a pet's name than a man's name.

Yeah, that came to mind for me too.

    Men I Lick

    Men I Like

I don't hate my son enough to do that to him. MN if you absolutely must. Even then I'm sure there will be comments when his peers discover what his mn is.

  • Imagine him with his little baby voice trying to tell people his name, and they won't be able to understand what the heck he is saying. The poor little guy will get so frustrated. I love Micah though.

Agree. Sounds like "many lick" to me. Great teasing fodder.

  • I think its bad. I wouldn't want anything that sounds like lick in my kids name. It kind of sounds like Men I Lick which could be on the playground.
  • I have a name that is really hard for people to pronounce and I really feel bad for other people with that same problem. It can be embarrassing for kids and frustrating for adults. Plus there might be some bad nicknames created from mispronunciations...that is one of the problems I had growing up.
