Holy small baby Batman!

My coworker's daughter had a baby yesterday. Baby girl was born at 37 weeks weighing 4lbs14oz. Is it me or does that sound crazy tiny?

Re: Holy small baby Batman!

  • That is CRAZY tiny!!!  My co-worker's wife had their baby at 30 weeks and he was about 4-1/2 pounds.  But that size makes sense to me at ten weeks early.  I'm having trouble wrapping my head around a 4 pound baby at 37 weeks, that seems soooo small!

  • Well I work in a NICU so I am used to smaller babies.  At the end of pregnancy babies can grow 0.5-1 lb a week.  Since she still had 3 weeks till she was due the baby could have gained another 1.5-3 lbs.  She might be on the smaller side but not crazy tiny.

  • Pretty tiny for sure IMO ... did she have any health conditions to contribute to a tiny baby? Or did she smoke? ... I really hope not.

Not that I know of. I should also add that aside from being small, baby is perfectly healthy.

  • I had a 3lb 12ouncer at 31 weeks but that still sounds tiny to me.

I was going to say having sat next to micro-preemies for weeks on end, it doesn't seem all that small anymore.  But, compared to my big ol' 7lb 15oz pink bundle of boy, even the 4lbers looked small.

  • My girls were 3lb8oz and 5lb at 35w. They were both SGA and the smaller one was IUGR. For 37 w, that is small though not crazy small. I wonder if they delivered early due to her size.
  • Teeny tiny!!!!

  • Reading all the responses is making me realize everything is a question of perspective :)

And on a side note, her water just broke naturally, she wasn't induced.

  • That seems tiny to me, too. Could be for any number of reasons. I am chubby and my mom had 8-pounders and during my weekly ultrasounds they guessed Lincoln would be a 9-pounder. Even strangers remarked that they thought he would be large. Alas, no. My belly was not particularly large but being a FTM I assumed everyone else would be correct. Instead I birthed a peanut.

  • Too me that sounds tiny for 37 weeks.  I also have never heard of anyone having a baby that small that far along in pregnancy!  Maybe also sounds small cause DS was born at 33w and was 5lbs.  But the nurses always joked in the NICU that he was a HUGE baby lol.

Woah yeah! My friends' DS was born at 34 or 35 weeks (can't remember) weighing in over 5lbs and my first reaction was "I don't want to imagine how big he would have been if he'd waited until he was 40 weeks to come out."

  • My cousin recently had her son at 36 weeks (she had an emergency C/S due to sudden pre-e).  He was 4lb 15oz and had to stay in the NICU for maybe a week for some breathing issues.

E was 4lb 15oz when she was born at 39w2d, but she has some health issues.

I can't even imagine holding a baby so little!  Joey was 8lb 4 oz and when my best friend had a 6lb baby 5 weeks later, I held her and she seemed so small I couldn't believe it.

Glad the baby is healthy!  Does she have a name?
