Hi Ladies,
I'm due January 29 and I'm still undecided about when to start my maternity leave. I live in California and found out that my OB will take me out 4 weeks prior to my due date, the maximum time CA allows prior to EDD. My 36th week is January 1st and our offices are closed for New Years so technically January 2nd. December 1, 2012 I'll have about 11 days/2 work weeks +1 of PTO saved up and am thinking about using some of the that time for the 3 days after Christmas, our offices are open 12/26-28. I don't see myself rolling out of bed to commute 60 minutes to work if I don't have to. AND I'm trying to figure out what will I do for approximately 31 days, if I go the whole 40 weeks!!! What are you doing for your maternity leave? I feel like I want to save my PTO time for the end of my leave..IDK!!!
Re: Undecided on when I want to start my maternity leave...When are you starting yours?
This. With henry I actually went out a week before he was born (on my due date) because at my very small office there was a NASTY disease going around. I work for my dad so he was worried, and he is a hypochondriac sooo. It didnt count toward my mat leave though. That week was honestly SO nice. I got a lot done. But I wouldnt take it if it took from my maternity leave. Going back after leave was hard enough!

My plan is similar in that I plan to continue to work until I go into labor (unless it becomes medically necessary that I stop working), for the same reason-- I want to maximize my time off to spend with LO. I work for the federal government and do not get any sort of maternity leave, so I have to use my own vacation and sick time that I've accumulated. However, the agency I work for has a pretty liberal telework policy, and so I plan to telework the last month of my pregnancy... I just cannot imagine commuting an hour into the city on the metro in the middle of winter here in DC while 36+ weeks pregnant!

Dear Baby Pacheco...
I kind of have a similar situation. I run a daycare from my house. I always close the week between Christmas and New Year's because DH is off and most of my families are automotive (so they shut down that week too). I'm due 1/12 and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me to re-open for a few days, go into labor during the day when I have a houseful of kids, and inconvenience the parents who will have to scramble to get their kids.
Long story short, I'm closing December 22 and not re-opening until 4 weeks after baby is born. (And when I re-open I'll have help for the first 2 weeks--DH the first week and MIL the second week. If I need more than that I've had several friends offer...)

I plan to work until I have the baby. I will be 38 weeks the week of Christmas, and the whole week is a paid holiday. If I don't have the baby by the end of that week, I am going to see if work will let me work from home until I do have the baby. We have fast labors in my family, and if I'm at work it will take two hours to get to my hospital. I'm just not comfortable with that time line.

My Mat Leave continues until the end of June. It would go until January but I am unemployed for the summer, so am on EI right now (have had no jobs yet), so that messes up how long my Mat Leave goes for.
Then September-January of next year I plan to work about 2 days a week and stay home the rest of the time. DH works at home so can adjust his schedule and my mum is off a couple days a week so I don't have to look into daycare until LO is a year old (which a lot of daycares around here won't take a child until they are that old anyways).

My situation is similar. I'll be taking the first 4 weeks with sick time. STD kicks in until after 30 days and I'll get 2-4 weeks paid at 60% (filled in with sick time) and then I'll take the rest with sick/vaca time. I'm planning to save 2 weeks of leave (sick and vaca) for after my leave. Ultimately I'm going to be out 11-12 weeks FT (depending on type of delivery) which would put me back mid April and then work 4 days/week for another 9-10 weeks, so back 100% some time in June.

I think it's total BS that the faculty at my university get a full quarter off paid, but staff only get their job protected and have to drain sick/vaca time to be with their new babies. But that's another rant.
As long as all is going well, I will work until I go in to labor. I have an interesting situation though. I work from my home office (not self-employeed) and most of my "work" involves travel across the Western half of the country. I'm cut-off from work flying after 28 weeks (October 24th). So, I'll be working strictly from my home office. If for some reason I go on bedrest, I can still techinically "work".
I have to use PTO for the 1st week of short term disability, then I get an additional 5 weeks (if vaginal birth) or an additional 7 weeks (c-section) on short term dis. After that, it's PTO. I plan to take at least 8 weeks, but unfortunately not the full 12 I could take.

With my first I worked until the day before he came... I actually started having contractions at work (but didn't realize it
). This time I might be too tired to work up until he is due but I plan to play it by ear as it gets closer. It is hard going back to work. I am taking the 12 weeks that you are allowed to take and still keep your job.
This. I work for state government so I have to use my sick and vacation time for my maternity leave (to be paid anyway). So I'll leave work when I got into labor or when I'm medically unable to work.
We are lucky DH gets his bonus January 1st so if I HAD to take more time off without pay we'd be fine plus we have a good savings right now but I really hate not to have both incomes.
Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

I plan to work up until the day beofre I deliver, as I will most likely be induced. I was induced with DS#1 and worked until 5:00 pm the day before he was born. So, that is the plan again since I do not have any paid maternity leave.
