Childcare question/ poll

I'm considering watching a child in my home. I don't know very much about the cost and I don't know if it's something that I want to jump into if I'm not going to be making our lives better.

If you don't mind responding:
How much do you pay per week for childcare?
Is your child in someone's private home or in daycare?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Childcare question/ poll

  • We currently pay $367/week for center-based care.

ETA: we actually pay per month ($1465), and are in the Sacramento area of California, so pretty HCOL.  Oh, and he goes 4 days/week (but we have to pay for all 5).

  • Years ago I used to watch a child who was a year younger than Ds. This was 11years ago so obviously the price would be different today. I believe I charged $150 a week and I had her for 7 days a week for 8-10 hours. Today I honestly don't know what I would charge. It depends on how many hours and days. I watched her at my house and which she was a baby the food was provided by parents. I actually regret doing this while Ds was so young because I feel it took away from him, BUT he was an only child too. there's a lot to think about when you take on somebody elses child. I would make a pro/con list.
  • My kids are in centers right now, because I like the flexibility. Of course, the law here is a little crazy (in my very biased opinion) and gives in-home daycare providers that are affiliated with a union 6 (yes SIX) weeks of annual vacation time. Of course, not all of them take 6 weeks, but still.

Anyhoo, that was kind of off topic, sorry.

To answer your question, daycare here usually cost between $25 and $35 a day (regardless whether it's in home or a center), but I'm seeing more and more $40 and even $45 places, but that's mostly in newer centers.

Also, I think most in-home ask that you bring your own child's food if they're still on purees, but centers will provide it for you. Some places will provide things such as vaseline, tylenol, nasal spray, others will ask you to provide your own.

  • We use a provider who has a private home-state licensed day care.  Logan goes there 4 days a week (DH is home one day alternating wed/thurs).  She charges $30/day and includes lunch/snacks now that Logan is old enough.  We live in a very suburban area outside between Trenton, NJ & Philadelphia, PA.  Childcare overall is VERY expensive around this area.  We were lucky to know of someone that was reasonably priced.

  • We lucked out and SO's Aunt watches DD at her house for $20/day but with no receipts.  I provide meals/snacks.

Around here the general rate is $30 - $35 a day for in home care and I think the daycare centers might be about the same.

  • My Mom watches DD for $100. This is VERY low even for my area, so don't count my input! ;)

I just wanted to say that if you decide to do this, make sure you put together a handbook of guidelines and expectations from each party involved. That way there is no discrepancy and you don't get walked all over!

  • We pay $385 a week for a daycare center.  That is about the going rate in our area.  It isn't one of the cheapest centers but it isn't the highest either.  They also provide all of DD's meals and the milk.

We live just south of Sac, and I get paid $300 every two weeks for watching a 3 year old boy in my home M-F 8-4.  I get paid regardless of whether or not he shows up, or if I need a sick day.

I recommend you think about things like whether or not you can leave the house/transport the other child with your current vehicle, whether or not the other parent is going to allow you to transport the child and what you will do for alternate care if you have a doc's appt.

It's nice to have the extra spending cash, but at the same time it's a PITA some days.  My little guy gets here when ever his mom feels like it, and he gets picked up sometime between 3pm-6pm.  It's kind of a crapshoot during the summer.  That drives me nuts.

You also have to tolerate other parenting styles.  Like, yesterday, little boy's poop was RED!!  I freaked.  He didn't complain of abdominal cramping or his bottom hurting, but all the same... that's not normal.  Called his mom, couldn't reach her.  Called his sister, couldn't reach her.  Finally, got a call back from mom...  Oh, don't worry, it's either the 3 bags of Gushers he ate yesterday or the 3 red velvet cupcakes he ate yesterday.  I'm all for you do your thing, I'll do mine...  but BARF -- who feeds all that crap to their kids within a 12 hour period?

And, he's just weaned off the bottle...  BARELY.  He's a good kid, and I totally like watching him, but I side-eye the crap out of his parents most days.  You'll have to get over it, like I *TRY* to do everyday.

Anyways, good luck with your decision.  Honestly, as counterintuitive as it sounds, having an extra kid helps me with mine.  They all entertain each other so that I can clean, set up crafts, make meals, etc.  And, having someone just older than my oldest means that DS1 strives to do things just like his friend.  So, when 3 yo was potty training, DS1 started because he wanted to (he was only 19 months).  DS1 was PT'd by 2.  So, there's give and take.

  • We pay $1380/mo/kid (so $350ish/week) for FT DC in a center. They're there roughly 7:30-5. This is about the going rate here (some places quoted me as high as $1600).  I got quotes from a couple of licensed in home providers for $950/mo/kid, but they never have room for 2.

ETA: we're in the NYC metro

  • Thanks everyone for the responses. I asked some of my friends in the area and 35 per kid per day is what people are getting paid or paying on the low end.

I'm having so many conflicting feelings. DH and I have talked about this in the past, but since he's in school right now it's coming up again. Yes, we would love the extra cash. But, the ONLY nice thing about his schedule is that his days off are during the week. So, if we add someone else's kid to the equation, we can't do family things during the week when he's off. I also think the boys would enjoy the extra playmate. I have a van so I would be able to take the extra child with us.

There's so much to think about.

  • I AM MOVING TO YOU LADIES!!! ( except mrsemily)

I switched DS daycare to a homebased day care which is my cheaper for us. We are now paying about $200 a week, we WERE paying$ 1000 a month for one child. We had to pay when DS was not there. They even wanted me to pay during summer ( I work in a school and dont work during the summer).  We now go to a home based center and she is a retired teacher and doesn't not charge us if E is not there. I have already saved $2000 dollars by switching.

I live a few miles north of NYC!

  • We pay $25 per day. It's a lady we know who watches DD in her home. She's not licensed but does have a degree in early childhood education.
